You want to have at least the second tier fishing pole. If you really want to go overkill, you can get the one from doing all the Hard fishing records, but it's not necessary.
You want to reel sparingly or at least not constantly, since the tension will build quickly. Really moreso you just need to be on with fighting the fish in the appropriate direction, so he won't gain huge chunks of distance. For me, I realized I wasn't fighting correctly when he'd try to run directly away from me (up on the stick or mouse-lowering the tip of the rod), so he'd gain too much distance.
You also really can't let him run and expect him to get tired, as he'll regain plenty of his stamina before you can reel him in close enough, so it's just a waste of time and a risk that he'll break the line once it goes too far.
It took me a while and I was pretty frustrated. Then I watched that video and realized what was wrong with my technique, and reeled him in in like 2 minutes after. Hope that was of help. Don't give up.
I'll probably try again later assuming I can be bothered, all this hassle for a slightly better rod doesn't seem worth it.
Let him move around but keep enough tension so as to hold him on the spot.
After a while you'll be able to apply more tension and reel him closer but then you have to release tension again to the point where you can hold him again. Rince and repeat.
And as mentioned cast the line closer to the boat.
I had a ♥♥♥♥♥ of a time trying to get him. Then the line broke after maybe 6, 7 minutes of effort.
Second cast, had him within maybe 20 feet in the first 15 seconds. Got carelessly aggressive with it and the line snapped right before I caught him.
Third cast, caught him in about 20 seconds.
