Yeah, even the 'variable zoom' optics, i click between the settings to make sure I'm actuallly zoomed in. It's hilariously bad.

For example, the in-game "LONG RANGE SCOPE" has 2.8-4.2x variable magnification. This is pretty hilarious, since that scope has similar shape and reticle as a real-life scope which has 3.5-25x varaible magnification.
The probably did it more so for optimization reasons than balance. Scoping is almost instant, so they nerf zoom so the engine doesn’t have to work as hard to render stuff far out
Yes, this is quite likely. However, I would have strongly preferred that the game would have as realistic equipment as possible. Now it feels like the in-game shopkeeper had played a bait-and-switch scam on me. That is, instead of selling me a high-end rifle scope, the shopkeeper sold me airsoft toy scope in expensive package.
