I can't do pistols Takedowns

I sneak up behind a guy, it shows "F for Takedown", i press it then it shows right mouse click to sidearm takedown, but when i press it, it does a melee takedown and not a sidearm.

Takedown is physically sneaking up behind someone and breaking their neck or something. Try hold a melee weapon like a knife or bat. Can also mean - bat to the head.

Edit: actually, after rereading your post. Pretty sure I misunderstood. Imma give it a try.

Theres a challenge to do takedowns with sidearms, and even when im hold it, it doesn't do the sidearm takedown.

hold right click, you'll pull out a sidearm and then you have to left click while right click is held.

yea it deosn't seem to be working for me
periodically it will give me the prompt to do a pistol take down but the only time it does that is when the person is in the final second of the take down animation

If you have the perk you need to consider the action a QTE when you do a takedown. If you do it near another target you will briefly see the command to do the other takedown. It's all about the timing.

I have realised my mistake. I originally thought that it was a special melea takedown using a pistol, but you need another enemy in your fov inorder to activate
