As the OP stated - the character we play is just a mindless, muted puppet. I think it's rather shoddy and pathetic. Mainly because no matter how you customise your character - it makes ABSOLUTELY no difference to the game. You never get to see your character anyway - so why make sure a big deal out of customising it?
You play an entire game and your character isn't even allowed to have a voice??? That's ludicrously pathetic for a game of AAA rating (apparently). I think it's just Ubisofts laziness - that or they had a deadline they couldn't meet so they didn't bother finishing off the players audio and scrapped it. If so - that's even worse because it means they're not interesting in selling a polished and bug-free game but would rather release any old crap, but make us pay to beta-test their games.
Personally I prefer it this way still.
For example my character was sympathetic to the cult idea but did what had to be done, while someone on forums hated cult and saw them as nothing more than bad guys.
Now I'm not saying this was ubisofts intention, imo they tried to avoid needing to hire 2 voice actors, and drama that would follow because "female character sounds better that's unfair!" etc.
Still, I enjoyed freedom of reactions it gave me far more than Jason and Ajay.
This made my day better, thank ya. Jason Brody character and all his friends are like the main characters from the "American Pie" movies. They were on "Typical College" like vacation and he becomes like "Rambo" really fast, which also happens to Ajay's character in FC4. At least one could assume that your character on FC5 has some kind of basic training with guns and stuff.
Like 'Pigmachine' said, "the protagonist is what you make him". In other words, use your own imagination.
I truely don"t mean to offend anyone. Its a discussion not an arguement. Agree to disagree is what i mean.
Sorry for the rant, I just read a review on Steam that someone "Not Recommended" only because of the Story. I just find it odd that the story in a video game means more to some than the Gameplay, which was rated 10/10 in the review. To me, a good story in a video game is just a bonus for me. A bad story also a bonus cuz it makes me laugh.
I enjoy the silent protagonist! Although hearing Issac Bicker with other characters is hilarious. Silent protagonists allow the game makers if done right to add more drama. Makes it more personal to the person playing.
At least that’s usually the intent and also what I get from silent protagonists.
I was sort of vocal about my disappointment in the decision to give a voice to the player's character in Fallout 4. It didn't make sense to me, Fallout (to a lesser degree each iteration) is a RPG. It's weird hearing someone's voice talking for my alterego. The game still has chosen dialog, ffs. In no way does my character sound like that... yet, I was told over and over again... "No, man. You don't get it. A voiced actor is better."
Far Cry, meanwhile has always been the Action Movie of the Week game for me and it really hit its stride at 3 when the meatheaded sociopath finally got a voice. There's no playing the good guy in these games, we're playing a psychopath. Sure, the narrative might suggest we're on the side of good, but we're blood letting agents of chaos... with our sacks of rotting bait to call in the wolves, and our arrows to shoot hornets nests down on oblivious guards and our chained melee from above with tripple tapped silenced pistol to the chest of anyone else in the room attacks.
But... that's not me. And I really don't want "my" voice attached to that monster. I want someone else's voice justifying the heinous ♥♥♥♥ I make him do. Because this isn't a game about choice, it's a game about finding the bloodiest solutions so I can rush to the next murder spree.
I'm not sure why Fallout 4 (again, a game based on a lineage of player choices and character growth) was able to provide two voiced actors and Far Cry 5... a game with a near rushed down an alley of forced cut scenes wants me to fill in the blanks.
Hell, I've tried to play it "my way". I'm on my second play through now and for the life of me cannot slow the pace without being kidnapped, hijacked, slipped hallucinogens to get me to do what the developer wants... so, why couldn't they go ahead and fill those blanks in for me? I'd actually prefer to hear the psycho speak for him/herself.
And for the record (and despite my gripes here), the gameplay is a hoot and I love the companions (and their personalities). I'd have really enjoyed the weird banter/flirtation between "me" and the NPCs. It feels weird having my deranged character mutely ignoring Jess going on about my nice ♥♥♥♥♥.
I am fairly sure the critiquely acclaimed Half-life games were AAA. There were many many reviews at the time praising the decision, saying it made you feel more immersed, you create your own persona as you were the charecter, not just watching some one else play out the story.
I think that's what FC5 were aiming for, what's the point of having a customisable charecter if it's going to be voiced over as some one else anyway.
REALLY??? Wow, that's mind blowing. You can see yourself in a WANTED POSTER??? AWESOME!!!

Still the suckiest protagonist this series has ever had.

You can still create a fairly well written game while having silent protagonist like in System Shock 2.
I personally prefer this more than a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ wannabe edgy farcry 3 clone, that tries too hard to be "other game", rather than something original. What's wrong with video games having a silent, name-less protagonist anyways, games aren't films you know. Writing a story based on the fact that the player is controlling the character is quite interesting and it's the video game exclusive style of writing
