Was having a hard time, did all that was mentioned... Finally got him. Though I literally just would button smash reel (it rarely went red), after about 30mins of the same line, he just finally gave up and reeled straight in from about 50m, no fighting nothing... possibly a timer till he just gives up?

I hear ya man. Go grab a controller and knock it out in a couple minutes.

it sucks at how poorly they tested this mission.

Yes this is so much easier with the controller, because with the controller you can exert constant and continuous pressure with the right stick (instead of the mouse) to pull against the fish, and just temporarily release the left button when the line begins to go red. With the mouse, as soon as you stop moving it, all the built-up pressure is lost and you are pretty much back where you started.

I don't think this was ever intended to be this difficult using a mouse, it was just poorly tested and should have been fixed, e.g., to use the keyboard instead of the mouse to exert pressure against the fish.

I was having heaps of problems catching the admiral until I read this thread. But instead of changing to a controller, I enabled mouse acceleration and tuned the mouse sensitivity, presto. I caught the admiral and every other fish type.

I'm late to this game, so I only did this last night. Using mouse and keyboard. Took six tries. Once I actually got to the correct area and stopped catching random salmon...

The further I get catching hard fish, I fight more and reel less. Early on, I focus on just not letting them get too far away from me. I never let the line get even yellow for more than an instant - too much risk of a tough fish picking that moment to get feisty and combine with the reel's action (it doesn't stop instantly) to snap the line instantly.

It makes the fight a little longer because I spend most of it at middle and long range but it seems to me that every minute you don't lose gets the fish closer to giving up.

hehhe that co-op trick really is smart xD.

Well if you want to do things the way they are meant to, thing is you're forced to use a basic rod you find in the little isle. All you need get as close as the shore you can (glitchy as ♥♥♥♥ when you swim back), reel in when green, and quickly release as well as moving the mouse upwards the moment he fights back.

In the end he gets tired. Repeat until you succeed.
Can confirm:
Impossible & frustrating with my mouse
Stunningly easy with an xbox controller

Some people did it with a mouse, going to depend on the mouse and on luck.

Exactly!

I never would use a boat to fish a challenging fish.
Always do it from the shore and try to lure him to the left and right not let him swim away from your position into open water.

That did the trick for me. Even though I sometimes accidently jump into a small pond nearby the fishing area when blindly running left and right which stops the fishing as of going into swimming mode, so be careful about that.

But as you said, I actually get more fails on the boat than being successful either.

The answer is: Coop and a boat! (Tryed on PC)
Takes less than a minute.
The host fishes, and the coop partner drives the boat. Once a fish is hooked in the quest area, it is usually the "Admiral", and the boat driver only has to "run over" the fish. As soon as the fish is under the angler, it is considered hooked.

Coop? That game is already easy enough. XD

Still thanks for sharing. Already catched the Admiral alone yesterday. Just took me 10 minutes with my method.
But yeah, if someone is able to move the boat then fishing from the boat is far easier for sure.

But playing alone it's just a matter of them when the boat itself gets into the way of the fishing rod.

This mission in particular is programmed to try to make you tire the fish out in multiple hookings. You can try to hold on forever, but that just drags things out. Do a few big struggles (three or so) then fight hard on the last one.

I'd been trying for too long with keyboard and mouse, with controller got him first try. Nice...

On PC with no controller I was able to finish the Admiral and Ragnar the Terrible in under 5 minutes each, thanks to some clues here. I had to take Fast and the other part that worked was more downward movement with the rod in opposition to the fish. After just a few back and forth battles the fish tired and was easy to reel in.

This is my 3rd-4th playthrough and after an hour of frustration that everyone here has on PC fishing without a controller I had to look for help. I think previously I abandoned these dumb missions.
i found the trick to do this easily on the computer, make sure you pull in opposite direction even when you dont reel, and change direction as fast as he does. took me like a min
