From what i have read, you do use the NPCs sidearm (if they have one) That is why is seems people are confused as to why they are not prompted lots of the time.
I dont know what to believe until i utilize it myself in this game.
You use your own, kinda easy to see unless every NPC has a silenced/scoped/extra mag pistol with the same skin as mine, enemies just need close by to get the prompt.
Edit: Googled far cry 5 pistol takedown and got...

He demonstrates it correctly but hes wrong about it using the enemies gun. Proof is he did a pistol takedown on Angels, that don't carry pistols. I know for a fact none of the enemies carry a silenced 1911 with a red dot, yet that is what is being used to shoot with in my game. My pistol.
Lol that was actually on of the example i came across.
I guess it's best to mark an outpost which isn't liberated yet. If you have the World Icons activated in the "Interface" Options, you'll see how far away you are.
Then it's just approaching the outpost until you are around the 150m mark and shoot the enemies.
Just be aware that the icon itself is probably in the center of the outpost, so if any enemy is closer to you, it might just be 148m and not count.
