If they have 5 chests in their inventory for example, have them open one at a time, equip the best items from the batch, and open the next chest. This will help get the most out of your chest items and boost power level.
As for the power disparity. Are you using any trinkets, amulets etc from your level 20 character? Other than weapons, the three support items carry over across all characters and is actually a great way to boost the power level of a character that may not be as high of a level as others. I hope this explanation helped or made sense. Thanks.
Or in short: Item level is roughly proportional to the total number of items acquired across all careers.
Total power is hero level * 10 + item level power. Item level is accountwide. So if you have an item level of 200 on Sienna. Your level 2 Kerillian will open chest and get stuff level 200 and your friends will only get sutff in the range of their actuall item level -5 to +10 of that. Thats the disparity.
It's not necessary to equip the highest item before opening a chest. It's the highest lvl item you've ever looted/crafted over all characters. Even if you salvaged that highest item you'll still keep your "high score".
EDIT: Nonetheless, the exact numbers dont really matter, its as you said, your highest score +- if + that sets the next score.
