In short this is a heavy PVP focused oceans with permanent warfare between two factions, the Defiant Armada and the Shadow Fleet.
Additionally important to mention: Dub purchases are seperate from the "vanilla' oceans such as Meridian and the game client can only be accessed through Steam.
More changes would be the fact that there is no SMH badge required to join SMH, there are no blocades or flotillas in the game yet as well (supposed to be added in couple of months, while having a blockade "event" for these months).
The game is based heavily on PvP, as was mentioned, but that PvP is also sinkable. There is one archipelago which isn't sinkable and that is the Greywaters which is the one of the starter island (Port Venture). You can still be attacked by players there but you just can't be sunk.
Here is the map of Obsidian: https://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Template:Map:Obsidian_Ocean
Lionhaven is the home base of the Defiant faction and Night Harbour is the home base of the Shadow faction.
Because there are no blockades in the game yet, the only available houses to purchase are shacks and those exist only in these 2 islands and the starter island. Both of the faction islands can be easily reached from the starter island.
I'm hoping that by being steam exclusive they can VAC the cheaters
