If you get nothing but high pings it is probably your computer or internet, if not it might just be that you are playing at a time when players near you are not playing, distance matters.
This is usually the correct answer.
You and the hosts geographical locations can affect the experience massively, especially when your internet service isn't brilliant.
If you are playing at a time when there aren't a lot of players in your region online, you'll find yourself connecting to servers that are further away. It's probably best to adjust the time when you play to have a better experience.
