How do you build a high quality tank/vehicle?

I looked at a guide on this, but I ended up making two terrible vehicles.

If you want to get to a point where you can easily build high quality creations you just need to practice. I'd reccommend starting by finding reference pictures online and using those to recreate something in brick rigs. Doing that enough will help you to understand how the game works and how to create complex geometry using it as well as understanding how to create your own vehicles in the style of what you'd copy.

If you want to show that you have skill, make it so that it can't be easily remade by someone else. Make it as realistic as you possibly can. Most crappy tanks in the workshop are easily replicateable. But the good ones seem impossible to even make.

This seems like an overly ambitious goal for someone starting out. I might even suggest looking at some of the more simple yet good looking tanks on the workshop and taking them apart piece by piece. You'd be surprised at how many little items vehicles have on them that are made of parts you'd never expect to use. If you would like, I could suggest a few I think would be good for learning.
