What do you do in this game?
I get that here are ship and kraken fights... is that it? What else are you doing? Trading? Colonies? Quests?

Okay I don't know I'm able to awnser this entirely but I'll try:

The world consists of over a hundred different maps, you travel between these maps via gateways that are locked when you enter the map for the first time. By completing a certain number of random events(Ship battles, lifeboats you spot in the water, trading gold for food or the other way around, etc) the gates will open so you can proceed. Every map also contains one special island accompanied by an unique event. These can be one-off events(smuggling something into a port, looking at a weird island and saying ''ow that's cool'' or chasing down and fighting a ship.) or they can be the start of a larger questline(Discovering why a town is haunted and if you can stop it, being stuck in death's realm, helping an old hero finish what he started.)

Gamemodes

There are multiple gamemodes: First you have the main story, in which you try to stop a being known as ''Father'', he's the reason why there are krakens running amock in the first place. You will be hunted, trying to save ports taken over by Fathers followers. A ''save the world'' kind of story.

There is a freeplay mode in which you can explore the world from the get-go without the pressure of the main story, however there is an optional goal of rebuilding an old pirate emire. This is entirely optional but it does give you a long term goal.

There are also three more smaller side stories which are set in the same world and tell different stories. There is one which focuses on combat, one where you play as the bad guys(and control a kraken) and one where you get lured into uncharted territory by death itself.

Combat

The combat is FTL like, you command your crew what cannons to man, what part of the enemy ship to target, when to put out fires, etc. There are different weapons which focus on long- and short range combat, weapons that are focused on damaging the hull, weaponsa and enemy crew. Some weapons are special and cannot be bought in ports, but are quest rewards. There are also combat modifiers, which can make battles easier(in rain, fires will be extinguished automaticly) or harder(snowstorms sweep crew overboard, cannibals board your ship to attack you, strong winds damage your mast.) These modifiers are based on the weather and map you are in. There are also seaforts, strong enemies wihth a mega mortar on top of them, you cannot sink them and have to kill all the crew, so they're a challenge. They do give better rewards.

Exploration

In exploration mode you move your ship around, uncovering the fog of war. You have a wanted level which increases when you act like a pirate(starting battles on innocent traders), there are three levels of being wanted. The more wanted you are, the more repercussions you'll face(seaforts opening fire on you, bounty hunters hunting you down and ports closing on you). The quests on land are text-based adventures, so you'll have to read a lot and make choices on where to go, that sort of stuff. There are also trade toutes which you can either protect from pirates(lowering your wanted level) or raid(giving you money ever fewseconds you stand on then, but increasing your wanted level)

Save system

This game can be quite brutal and has permadeath, however there is a way to save. By finding golden shipwrecks across the world you can find captains logs, which you can use to create a manual save. When you die, you can load up your captains log-save to continue from there. There is a set amount of them in the world however, so use them wisely. There is also iron captain mode, in which they don't exist(permadeath mode).

Dying
When your ship is destroyed, you don't die. You will enter stranded mode(you either lie in the water on a piece of wreckage or you are sranded in a lifeboat, based on if you have a lifeboat or not) You can survive this by making certain decisions(paddling to a close, uninhabited island or paddling towards an island that is further away, but next to a trade route). Where your ship is destroyed also plays a role, if you are in a map with a port, the resque chance is greater. When you do get resqued, you keep your money and surviving crew but you'll have to start with a new ship. If you die while stranded.....your dead.

I hope this gives you some idea of what the game is. If you have any more questions, just ask :)
