CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.4ghz
GPU: Nvidia GTS 450 1gb
RAM: 3gb DDR2
Audio Drivers: Realtek ♥♥♥♥♥
Oh yah also unstall that realtek audio driver some say it was the reason their game stutters. Vysnc off might also help.
I'll try uninstalling MS Visual 2005-2008.
VSync is off, I'll check it stays off.
Will check that Realtek is not installed (pretty sure it isn't installed).
Thanks for the suggestions, please keep them coming for others who have the problem.

edit: sorry, while this fixed my own sound issues, apparently it doesnt help for everyone.
Sound issue resolved - upgraded video with GT 640 card.. must've been struggling for video memory...
However... new issue is crashing/rebooting after approx 15-30mins into a firefight..... :/
After some serious digging (all the way into BIOS settings!) discovered that fan control was not responsive enough for adequate cooling during sustained firefights (tended to crash more with heavy plasma cannon firefights)
Changing the ramping up rate of fan (and took the opportunity to alter baseline level at normal operation to be slightly quieter) helped to keep the firefights to last longer, up to a point (max 45mins sustained firefights), after which no further increase in fan speed helped and would still crash no matter what :@
The BIOS settings revealed there was an auto-shutdown temp (~80degC) which prevents overheating damage to CPU and motherboard. I dare not disable this setting as it would mean byebyeboard..
So I downloaded a couple of motherboard temperature monitoring progs for use while gaming, and the latest one I tried (which shuts off after a short while due to trial-cap) showed that mbd would easily hit 70degC at the "warmup" of a match/co-op..
I guess the next steps for me is to get some hardware monintoring dials, and take the brave step into watercooling...!
Hope this helps for others who have struggled with sound issues/crashing.
