There's so much lore in 40K that if you have a question about something in particular, just look it up as you go. There's still so much I don't know about haha
My suggestion is find a faction that intrigues you. If there's any games that include or let you play that faction, go for that one. My personal favorites are Ultramarines, Adepta Sororitas, and Orks.
If you're are in it just for the games, the Dawn of War games are good, sadly getting worse though from 1 to 3, but that in itself is not unusual. Going back even further, Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate, but it's on GoG not Steam.
If you find yourself getting sucked into the lore, google and peruse the Lexicanum.
One does not wait for reviews for SM2, one preorders SM2 as soon as it's available.
The Emperor protects.
Dawn of War 1 - 2 complete
Space Marine
Inquisitor Martyr
Should be more than enough, then you may jump to the turn based games later based on interest, theres dozens of them.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War - Winter Assault
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War - Dark Crusade
Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War - Soulstorm
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War II
