buy this play it youll love and wait for a couple of reviews for space marine 2. Learn from the previous hype of games, and wait for reviews for space marine 2.

There's no previous game you need to play to understand the story or anything like that. The story of this game is self-contained and there's enough explanation for the stuff that appears IMO. At most, you would only need to be familiar with the lore at a surface level.

My introduction to Warhammer 40K was the tabletop. My first army I ever painted was Ultramarines. I read a little bit of lore on their Codex, then I watched lore videos and any fan/official animations I could find on YouTube.

There's so much lore in 40K that if you have a question about something in particular, just look it up as you go. There's still so much I don't know about haha

My suggestion is find a faction that intrigues you. If there's any games that include or let you play that faction, go for that one. My personal favorites are Ultramarines, Adepta Sororitas, and Orks.

Hard to say with Warhammer, everyone seems to have their own entry point because as has been said, there is just so much lore that spans decades.

If you're are in it just for the games, the Dawn of War games are good, sadly getting worse though from 1 to 3, but that in itself is not unusual. Going back even further, Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate, but it's on GoG not Steam.

If you find yourself getting sucked into the lore, google and peruse the Lexicanum.

One does not wait for reviews for SM2, one preorders SM2 as soon as it's available.

For starters

Dawn of War 1 - 2 complete
Space Marine
Inquisitor Martyr

Should be more than enough, then you may jump to the turn based games later based on interest, theres dozens of them.

No previous game required to understand the basic plot, although I would recommend these 40k games in this particular order:

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War - Winter Assault
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War - Dark Crusade
Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War - Soulstorm
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War II
Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon
Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Retribution
