i usually use crowbar modding tool for that
2) once installed, add L4D2 as a game to crowbar, which will allow you to edit your mods (you may need a tutorial to set it up right, though its not super difficult)
3) publish your mod through the L4D2 authoring tools. Any mods published through crowbar cant be edited or viewed via the authoring tools, so its best to just publish them that way and edit them with crowbar
4) prepare your thumbnail, with a square resolution. I would aim for 300x300 or 250x250 so that it doesnt get compressed too much. Make sure your thumbnail is less than 1mb. You can also do gifs this way
5) edit your mod through crowbar and change the thumbnail, then update the mod to see the change on the workshop

Not sure how to convince someone who trusts using a virus checker how to trust a random program on the Internet. Whether you trust a virus checker or not, find out about the program by looking through its source code, searching through posts about the program (and looking for anyone complaining about getting a virus from it), and seeing if people have been using it recently.
As the developer of Crowbar, I can say I have not made Crowbar a virus or put any viruses in it by using strict coding practices, but which will you believe, some random person on the Internet (me) or your so-called virus checker?

The download has never been unsafe. If you are scared or do not trust the download, you can download the source code, review it, and build it yourself.
