Ideas on what to do about Trolls who TK or do other annoying or harrassing things?

I've been playing this game for nearly 4 years. I think I've racked up something close to a million zombies in that time, I've always been a total team player. I never stick out like a sore thumb either and I'm always friendly,. In all this time one thing has always remained existant. Yes those annoying trolls who target players on expert mode or even in advanced and do an endless list of things for the soul purpose of ruining the game for the other players, making players angry, throwing insults or profanity at them, etc.

For some reason I get targeted it seems quite often. I don't even take the bait. I just try to ignore them and keep on playing. I might say something like "Gawd, yet another troll". But really do not respond to their sillyness or their insults. Back a couple of years ago trolls liked to come in near a saferoom, wait till the other players are in the distance fighting off a horde, kill everyone then go in the saferoom and stay there until you have no choice but to give up and leave. Now often in expert mode this can be extremely irritating if you've been playing on a team of 4 decent people trying to beat a campaign on expert for hours.

I wonder what kind of mentality does it take for someone to commit to ruining the fun for other people. I have my theories, and there could be many reasons. Everything from the victims of bullies themselves and they get some sense of satisfaction from acting like this and annoying other people, to possibly being abused by a parent and they want to take their anger out on other people, to being simply extremely childish and just have a mean streak in them. What ever the case I don't think these people really understand what they seem like to decent players like my self.

They will sit there and accuse you of being an idiot, a pervert, a homosexual, or what ever they can think up that is insulting enough to try and get a rise out of you. If they really understood that to the players they are doing this to they appear very stupid and childish, and that they are an extreme annoyance that are doing something counter productive and very rude maybe they (some of them anyway) would think twice about it. Thier not entertaining anyone but themselves.

I stopped playing the game months ago because of these trolls. It got so bad that not one single night was there not a time when they would show up. And their tactics are getting smarter. They will often work in groups of two, look for a new game, enter, then kill you and try to vote kick you. Other unknowing players do not catch on to what is going on and will vote kick you too or not vote at all. With two of them there working together, even if there is a 4th person there, they annoy that person as much as they can, wait till they leave then instantly vote kick you. If you go and start a new game they just follow you there and do it again.

Last night and another night recently I started playing again. Last night the very thing I just mentioned happened. I was followed for more than 2 hours into new games. Even after I was killed more than once I did not attempt revenge. When the person came back in I hoped they would not target me because I have given them no reason to target me. That did not work, so I got tired of it and killed one of the guys. The other stayed in the starting saferoom, and I and the other player did not rescue his partner in every closets we went past.

When we finally got the saferoom at the end, the player in the starting saferoom simply stayed there and the other legit player said he was going to report them to steam and he left the game. Which at that very moment the two idiots vote kicked me. That was it, I quit the game and played Dead Island instead. Now there are solutions that are obvious. Play with friends only. Well though I have about 65 friends often there still isn't anyone online to play with, or their in a game that is full or their playing another game. Also you could just play normal mode, but when you have been playing as long as I have that get's very boring, it's just plain too easy.

So what is wit the mentality of these people anyway? After 4 years I still don't get it. So what can be done about this beyond the obvious. Comments? How bout you trolls? Why don't you explain why the hell you do these things. Do you realize that you are making first class asses of your selves? Do you know that to us you appear almost mentally challenged or even worse. Are you types going to grow up to be serial killers of something? It takes a pretty screwed up individual to even think of behaving so childishly. I figure most of you trolls to be under the age of 11. I can't imagine someone older than that actng so childishly.

Btw, Most damage to teammates: 11,082 (on Easy) - how is it even possible?

I think you're looking into their mental state a little too deeply. They do it because they can, and because they know there will be no long-lasting or serious punishment for it. Frankly, trolls and TKer's are the reason I stopped playing online. Between them and the elitist who kick you over the most petty reasons, the Bots are the best team mates you could ask for in this game. It's sad but true.

#Swooping - Most of that damage was to the bots. Killing them when their almost dead before closing the saferoom door. Sometimes just doing it with another player for the hell of it when we got bored. Some obviously though was from unintended friendly fire, which I often was guilty of early on in learning the game. As hard as I try I still do it but no more than any one else does. And yea most of my friends here sent me friend requests, I don't know many of them very well. I do send invites and sometimes that works. My subject did mention that many of them are not online or they are playing other games when I play.

jadepheonix84 - "They do it because they can". Well my response to that is that it seems it would take a person with a problematic personality to want to spend a lot of time doing that. There's a reason someone would do it because they can than just feeling like doing it because they can. Maybe just for fun some people might get a kick out of it occasionally, but the ones tat dedicate much of their gaming to doing it, in my assessment there is something more going on with their mentality. Obviously it's anti-social behavior at one level or another. And the reasons could be many, more than likely negative in nature. That's my opinion anyway. Take it for what you like.

I just played with one a bit ago. His method was one I had seen before. He was occasionally shooting us down, then saving us and healing us. Then he was being a team player, then he'd try to set us on fire. It was begining to get on my nerves but I felt if no one made an issue of it or tried to vote kick him maybe we'd get through the game. But of course near the last chapter he killed us all the shut him self in the saferoom. Next thing I did was exit the game and block him, as I have done with every troll that ruins the game. Yet they still keep coming, one after another. it never ends. I was good enough some time ago to get the ones that kill then quickly leave the game and come back in. I wasn't always successful but 7 out of 10 times I got them. But all it did was draw more attention and more trolls. This was before I knew you could block them and it meant they "couldn't" join games with you when you do that.

One of the points is to play on russian non-official servers. I've played on one of those servers a lot in the past and I must admit that while sometimes you meet trolls or just people who can't play at certain level they will be kicked instantly. I've found there players from germany, america, peru, even china. The same things I can say about servers in Belarus. People here are very seriously addicted to the game, they're mostly friendly and can play really good.
And you can also play with me, I've tought a lot during the past experiance. The most thing that I like in the game is a good tactic.

Getting stalked by groups of trolls? I haven't had the pleasure of that yet.
I mostly just find lone trolls who try to TK other players, more often than not failing horribly and ending up getting incapacitated/killed by me before being removed by a votekick.

In the rare case that I join a server with a bunch of loudmouthed pricks, I just leave the game.
Also sometimes we'll have a TK'er in the team, earlier today I just revived a teammate that had fallen to common infected (whilst dying, myself) and another guy shot me in the face with a shotgun. There were no enemies around whatsoever. He went down, he was revived, I asked what the reason for this was but got no response. The others didn't seem to care either.

In cases like that, (I) just move on and find another game.

If you don't have enough friends actively playing the game to make an anti-troll majority in a run, perhaps you can join a L4D2 group and join members instead? I'm sure that there's a bunch of groups around who accept decent teamplayers only.

My response to trolling is to ignore them, to behave like a bot, and to stick in the game.
What trollers want is your rage and frustration, so I won't give them any. Start a fight with them can work but usually you'll not win everyone, and a fight may be what they want too.
In this game, co-op is essential even for trolling. So a pair of trollers joining in just announces your game ruined.

lpic - I enjoyed your thoughts, and would love to play with you. Certainly maybe I could learn a few things from you. Nothing wrong with confidence if you've earned it. And I have learned from experience that I never assume I am all that as a player. Perhaps no one should. There is always someone out there more skilled than I am, or than they are.
