L4D2 Error, says "gameinfo.txt missing from left4dead2.
The whole error says this

"Setup file 'gameinfo.txt' doesn't exist in subdirectory 'left4dead2'. Check your -game parameter or VCONFIG setting."

I dunno what happened. This computer hasn't even been turned on in 6 months (was in storage) and now I finally unpack it, got done downloading all steam and game updates, and boom, every time I try to launch L4D2, it gives me this error.

Other games, like Team Fortress 2 and Borderlands 2, launch just fine.

Have you tried verifying your game cache? Right click on l4D2 in your library, go to properties, then to local files and click on "Verify integrity of game cache". Let it do it's thing, then try launching again. Let me know if that helps.
Yea I forgot to try that. It ended up solving it. Thanks!
This helped me too thanks
I renamed my folder I put steam in, and oof

Every couple of years I get a new reply to this post <3 I hope it keeps helping folks. Sorry to those it hasn't worked for, these games can be so finicky.
Hi! I wanted to leave another solution here in case someone faced this problem if they needed to use L4D2's Hammer World Editor. The external SSD Drive I saved Left 4 Dead 2 on also got its drive renamed to another letter (ex: Local Disk D: to E:). Make sure that all of the games that's open should be closed to prevent conflict.

Problems this guide should cover:
1. External SSD/HDD drives being automatically renamed.
2. Hammer World Editor doesn't open.

Error: Setup file 'gameinfo.txt' doesn't exist in subdirectory 'D:\SteamLIbrary\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2'.
Check your -game parameter or VCONFIG setting.

Solving External Drives Being Renamed:
1. Start Menu < Disk Manager
2. Right click on the drive your game is on
3. Hit "change drive letter." Example: E to D.
4. Save and apply changes.

Solving Hammer World Editor Not Opening
Note: During these steps of re-adding your Steam Library, some libraries that you've previously saved will show up as blank. However, these can be removed to declutter.

1. Exit out of any games that you're running.
2. Go to Steam Settings < Storage
3. Click on the External Drive that your game is located on.
4. Click on the three dots and hit, "Remove Library."
5. Remove the empty drive(s) that your formerly named letter the drive was on, and any remaining empty libraries. (The letter your computer assigned before you changed it back).
6. After no traces of your drive remains, click on the "Add Drive" in the drop down menu.
Assign the drive that you want to use.

Checking If It Works:
If you've followed both sets, you should see your renamed drive letter and Hammer World Editor should open.

Hope this helps someone!

Months later addition as I'm going through my own steps to resolve the issue again.
Context: Recently installed Hammer++ for L4D2.
Problems that came up: Hammer++ and Crowbar.

If you're using a Windows 7 or 8 device, Disk Management might not be accessible when using the Start search bar. Follow one set of instructions below:

1. To access Disk Management for Win 7/8, go to Start < Search < Run < Type in "compmgmt. msc" without quotations.

2. Go to My Computer < Manage < Click "Disk Management" in the console tree.

Still works as of today.

Here's a short guide I created that you all can use: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3221323449

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
