Gas cans exploding when shoved?
I've been experiencing a bug for a while where gas cans explode after they're shoved. There's a trick you can do where you throw a gas can and immediately shove it to make it travel further, which is useful for scavenge finales or for setting up gas traps. However, the cans sometimes explode when I shove them. Its an issue because it not only deals friendly fire damage, but also sets back progress during finales and ruins trap placements.

Here's everything I know about it so far:
- It doesn't happen consistently. Maybe once every 10-15 throws
- It happens in singleplayer, local host (both my own and other peoples servers) and official servers
- It doesn't seem to be related to my ping. If anything, it happens less often when I've got high ping.
- Everyone I've asked about it has been confused and they've never seen it happen before.
- It never used to happen to me. It's only started in the past 3-4 months.

Has anybody else experienced this or found a solution to it?

I can't remember that ever happening to me. Do you have a meele weapon in your hand at that moment? If you were holding a gun instead I could imagine you accidentally somehow shot the gas can after throwing it. I don't know if this is even possible, as LMB is actually only pressed once, but that would have been my only possible explanation off the top of my head.

This was my theory at first too, but it happens regardless of what I'm holding at the time, and the shove occurs before the weapon has deployed so I'm not sure how it would be able to fire unless its something to do with the animation being skipped

as far as I know this is only supposed to happen in survival. never heard of it being a thing in campaign or other modes. I know you can hit propane tanks with a melee weapon to make them explode but that's very different from what you're talking about lol

is it an intended feature in survival mode?

I've just checked the wiki page and it does note that shoving a can with a weapon will cause it to ignite as if its been shot. I suppose this is one possible answer, though it doesnt explain how inconsistent it is

I only experience this in single player, or when hosting locally. I think the low ping to the game server allows a shot to be registered sometimes even though you don't see it, especially when you are juggling cans and doing many inputs. The game server checks for updates every 30 ticks and will execute whatever command is input on that tick, but it does some weird input queuing stuff when what the client sees and the server sees are different that nobody has explained well to this day. I've always assumed it was something to do with that.

think so, it's the only gamemode where I've seen it happen consistently but I haven't extensively tested it

It's a side effect of all physics being "frozen" before the round starts, not an intentional design.
Since the gascan can obviously be picked up, but is essentially still identified as "frozen" by the game, it basically thinks the gascan is stuck and glitching out, so it resorts to the backup for that situation, which is to automatically destroy it.
It consistently only happens on the 2nd shove, and behaves normally after the round has started.

Probably it's related to mechanisms of breakable objects taking damage. Afaik, shoving deals small damage on breakable objects, but I'm not sure if this is also applied to gascans, propane tanks etc. But if it is, then it makes sense when a gascan suddenly explodes after it runs out of its health/ durability.

Years playing this game and this is the first time I've ever heard something related to gas cans exploding when shoved. You learn something new everyday.
