That's Nick's theory. & later Coach joked to ask Nick to stay in the saferoom if he didn't want to go . Well, probably the ending is between those two. Either Nick's theory came true, or the military simply wanted to rescue them (with or without ulterior motives). Imagine in zombie apocalypse, there are 4 survivors that stay uninfected. What would the researchers think about them? Valuable materials for researching & making vaccines, maybe

Considiring the survivors are carriers and can infect anybody who comes to contact with them;

The dark carnival pilot for example, he was infected and killed by the survivors,

The same could be apllied to the rescue chopper at the parish finale

best possible outcome: they're quarantined and studied then released, leading to a possible cure for the disease and their freedom.

Worst outcome: They undergo horrible experiments to no avail, and become infected themselves from prolonged exposure and/or probably killed afterwards anyway.

Yeah no, at this point the military is aware of carriers and wearing a gas mask is shown to protect non carriers as proven in the Sacrifice comic. The main running theory is that all carriers were taken to an aircraft carrier off the Gulf of Mexico in hopes of studying them and to maybe discover a cure. The Military would've just bombed the bridge, killing the survivors if there was no other way.

Chet Faliszek actually confirmed that they were taken to a cruise ship, not an aircraft carrier.

I also have my own theory that the military wants to train carriers as frontline soldiers, since unlike other military personnel, the carriers aren't screwed if they get scratched by a common, so they're the only people that can feasibly clear out overrun areas.
Also, considering that the survivors literally fought through multiple states with nothing but scavenged supplies, just imagine how easily they could clear out entire cities with proper military support.

that's actually a really good theory, I hope that turns out to be the case, it would also make for an interesting setting if l4d3 is ever made and centered around the l4d2 survivors' journey after The Parish
