Solving Engine Errors

Hello everyone. As I have been wandering around here for long. I saw people came to the discussion to ask for help in Engine Errors but find it hard to get answered. So, I will make it here....

L4D2 Engine Error is the problem that occurs when certain conditions are met. More Importantly, Verify Integrity of Game Cache usually not solve the errors. You may need to do a work around for a few steps

Here are the list of known Engine Errors that happens so far and how to solve them

Engine Error:Too many indices

※ Too many indices for index buffer.. tell a programmer (36102>32768)
This occurs from high poly model replacement mods. Both Survivor and Infected can cause this. Even from a single mod. How to solve it?

• Disable mod that causes it. In case if you remember the latest model replacement mod you sub'ed before this problem occurs.
  
• Put $nodecal 1 in the VMT file. In case if you know basics in model modding. Or tell the modder.
  
• Lower Texture Setting while in-game. This may not solves the problem though

Engine Error:Model Not Precached

※ x/ - TeamName: UTIL_SetModel:not precached: path/ModelName
This usually occurs when playing L4D1 campaigns, DLC campaigns(The sacrifices, The Passing), Have L4D1 survivor/Common Infected model replacement add-ons. Or out date custom campaigns that has old method of population data. Or failure while precaching due to missing datas etc... How to solve?

• Verify Integrity of Game Cache.
  
• put this in launch option. +precache_all_survivors 1
  
• Disable Add-ons that is Custom Campaigns that uses custom models such as L4D1 Common Infected, Special Infected, L4D1 model. Or mods related to L4D1 SI, CI and Survivors

Engine Error:Steam is not running

※ Steam is not running. You must start Steam in order to play this game.
This occurs when synchronizing failure due to connection issues. Connection to steam servers issues. Etc.
How to solve?

• Restart steam usually solves the problem.
  
• Restart Router Or Restart PC/Laptop

Engine Error:No Free Edicts

※ ED_Alloc: No Free Edicts
This occurs mostly from Custom Campaigns that has very high details. In map modding. Giving too many details will hit entity limit. as for map modders, you can see entdata from compile log. It must not exceed 200% in campaign and 100% in versus.
How to solve?
[For non map modder]

• Nothing you can do here. So contact the modder and provide the exact location where it crashed and which chapter

[For modder]

• Try to use prop_static if possible, remove some details.
  
• Make a smaller area and split into more chapters in case really want to use tons of entity.
  
• reduces the usage of ent data(physics, dynamic, point entities, block entities, etc)

Engine Error:Index Exceed 2536

※ Index must not exceed 2536
This occurs when using scripts mod that has something to do with increasing entity such as Weapons spawn, Custom Special Effects, Common Infected, Special Infected etc.
How to solve?
For non modder

• Disable add-ons that related to alternates gameplay with scripts(weapon scripts excluded)

For modder

• Use Kill() after entity done its job.
  
• Do not use CreateSingleSimpleEntityFromTable() in such spamming events such as Update(), Weapon_fire, AllowTakeDamage() etc.

Engine Error: Library Client

※ Could not load library client
This occurs after loading intro ends and before loading screen to main menu. For some reasons Client.dll is missing or corrupted.
How to solve?

• Verify integrity of game cache. After the process done, go to game directory. "L4D2Directory/Left 4 Dead 2/left4dead2/bin" search for client.dll then set it to read-only. You may back up this file if you want.

Engine Error: CUtIRBTree

CUtIRBTree error happens when the game processes too many of particles/effects that over engine limit. though i'm not sure what exactly triggers this error.
Fix:

• Reduce the particles/effects
  
• Set the time gap of particles being showed if must use a lot of particles
  
• Look into the console to keep track of SCRIPT PERF WARNING --- "<lambda or free run script>" ran long at x.xxxxxxx ms. when start spawning group of particles. more warnings, more chance the crash

And that was all known Engine Errors so far. Please note that the suggestions above may not solve for everyone. As some people may have different conditions.

If anyone still has the problem or has any other engine error besides than above, we can discuss for further details in the comment.

Better create a thread rather than ask here. This thread is for Engine Error discuss. Most people would not bother to click in here if they do not have something about engine error. So, it would be hard to find answer here.

To answer your question. You may try to verify game if you think your original characters are missing.

my laptop was running that game till it said ♥♥♥♥ you am not running anymore and then decided to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stop and every time i try to make it work and actually run it it stays on the loading screen for like 30-40 sec and close without saying any errors and i have verified the game 4 times and reinstalled it and done every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing i know (at least in my book) to make it work still ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ NOTHING.. and i actually contacted the support and as we all know that steam support eats ♥♥♥♥ soo please help if you can, i want to play the game but insted it leaves me on pending just like every other hoe i tried to talk to... #HELP

Did you have add-ons? Crashing to desktop with no error usually causes by add-ons.

If not, it usually comes from VGA driver. If your game crashed in full screen, you can try -window(put this in launch option). Or try -novid.

By the way, I would suggest you to create a thread instead of comment in here. I am not that active, so you probably gonna wait too long to get just guessing suggestions which is not worth your waiting time.

update: after a looooooooooongA$$ time of testing and trying i think at this moment everything to solve my error
last night i found that if you have the same glitch or issue that i had
i think it is a simple fix
so if you got the glitch that get your game to suddenly crash without saying its a crash or giving you any kind of error or crash massage you can do the next steps:
1- update your steam client (sometime that helps).
2- make sure that you local files are in one place.
3- uninstall the game.
4- go to the local files of the game at "the steam file local ♥♥♥♥ that you got it in\Steam\steamapps\common".
5- delete the remaining file of the game
6- install the game as it was new to the pc you play on
7- you are welcome
