RAGE 2
Floid May 14, 2019 @ 11:25pm
Possible solution to game not starting problem - but...
...I need some kind soul to give me a default copy of this file:
Windows : %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\id Software\Rage 2\settings.ini

Thanks.

PS; if this works then we might all genuinely be able to play this game finally.
Since my game won't start I can't generate a copy of this file myself.

One advice: install Nvidia Geforce Experience and let it update the driver. Worked for me.

Nice one thanks Error !
One quick question though, just to make sure, is the format as you've pasted it in your post, is that how it's layed out in the actual settings.ini file ?

Just wanna make sure - so my manually created settings.ini file is exactly the same as what the game would generate it's self.

Thanks again.

i appreciate the effort but sadly it didn'T work for me :(

It's a copy paste from the ini just using notepad, i've gone back and looked and it's there in the entirety.

I did change my graphics settings , so you might want to check that out as well by editing the settings (Sounds like you are all over it though)

the start up issues seems to be due to lower end cpu's are you using a i3 by any chance at all?

Nah I was just try to figure out why the game still doesn't run for folks that meet the sys req's and have updated their drivers.

Well I tested it out anyway, created a cloned settings.ini, had to use a copied then edited settings.ini from another avalanche game. Edited it to have the settings Error provided, and change the resolution height/width to match my native rez.

I tried all the permutations of I could think of with:

VSync=0,1,2

DriverVersionCheckCounter=0,1

Fullscreen=0,1,2

There are many many more permutations of settings I could have tried, but given how many boot influencing settings there are in the config, it would have taken literal years to try every permutation lul.

But those settings were the main ones I wanted to try, just to test if it was a screen mode setting boot up issue.

My main theory now is that, Rage 2 is not installing some required Vulkan api redistributables elements in order for it to run. Which is founded on the fact that no new Vulkan api system elements are added when you install the game, eg like when MS Visual C++ elements are installed by a game's steam install script if you don't have it.

But Vulkan seems to be different, firstly it's not included in the steamworks common redistributables package options at the moment it seems... so you're not gonna get it from steam... nor is it a per-requisite element install script with the game, as I mentioned... so you're not gonna get it there either.

It also seems that your average user is not gonna get it from windows updates. So no dice there either...

The only place I can see a average user getting the correct VulkanRT-xxxxxx-Installer is in a supported GPU driver package. However it seems that both the correct Vulkan Runtime Libraries and the corresponding supporting windows platform updates are required in tandem. And not only that, they have to be compatible.

So what I mean by compatible is with every windows platform update there is a chance that it might break VulkanRT use, or conversely, there are presidents in the past that new VulkanRT version updates don't work properly with a system that has a certain level of windows updates.

You basically need to find the right balance, where your versions of VulkanRT don't have any conflicts with your updated windows and visa versa.

However luckily for us VulkanRT seems to operate is the same way as other standard redistributables (like MS Visual C+++ or MS .Net framework).

Meaning we can just download different Vulkan Runtime Libraries from here:
https://vulkan.lunarg.com/sdk/home

If you would like to update your installation of Vulkan (for windows) just select the link called "VulkanRT-1.1.106.0-Installer.exe" in the windows box on that page.

Since rage 2 needs VulkanRT to run properly, it's probably wise to update :)
Of course your own brand of driver update for your GPU ' should ' do this also.
