Right now there are 7 skins, presumably with more on the way. Even at 20K xp per, that's 140,000 xp with each weapon. That is plenty of time to try out each one. Anything more than that is just tedium.
I'd say either allow you to work towards a specific paint (It doesn't have to be tied to which season you have active but that would be one way to do it) or cut the requirements for past paints substantially.
The idea is to get rewarded with extra skins for your favorite weapon, the one you use all the time; if your a Scout main who always runs the M1k you're not gonna have any issues getting all the skins for it in a reasonable time.
If you want to be a completionist and get them all, for every weapon and every class, then yeah; of course it's gonna take awhile.
It's designed to be a grind, because it's designed to get you to play matches you might not otherwise play.
god forbid you can't have everything immediately, right?
