His work was loosely based off some myths and legend. He invented their history, culture, language, traits, etc. These qualities are often shared in other fantasy works. Warhammer, Warcraft, Dragon Age, they all use the Tolkien inspired races and traits. As far as I know, Hobbits is an entirely original invention.
