Waypoint/Marker prompts
When you use your laser pointer, you can highlight by clicking on what you are pointing at, and when you hold down your click, you make a a waypoint that's permanent until you place another one.
But instead, when you hold down your click, it brings up a circular menu with different symbols to prompt what should be done at the point of interest. Such as having the symbol of a flare being asking for the Scout to put a flare up, A symbol of the platform gun, or a Dwarf on a platform to ask for a platform, symbol of a zipline to ask for a zipline up/down to a location, symbol of a drill for the Driller to dig at the location, symbol of a pickaxe to mine, and a symbol or Dwarves running to move to that location. And possibly put the word of the requested action at the waypoint in the place of the material that the basic marker says.

This game is cross-platform and a large number of players use controllers. The control options you suggest are unavailable due to the lack of buttons on a controller. Refer to the controller scheme in game to propose a solution that will work for all players.

I don't think the devs would develop two separate control schemes for PC and Xbox players. It would increase their workload and open them up to criticism of their game being good on PC and horrible on Xbox.

I'm not a big console gamer, but I'm sure you can hold down a button on a controller. It's capable of that I think. Those circular menus were designed for controllers.

This is why I refer you to look at the controller button scheme in-game. Currently to call people to follow you, you press left bumper. To pull out the laser pointer you hold left bumper. So they've already used the hold function. They have so many functions on the controller down on the d pad cycles between equip 4 and ammo drop. It's very nicely setup, but they've reached the limit. Unless they add a circular menu, which I'm glad they haven't.

A circular menu is exactly what the op is suggesting. I don't see how it would make the control scheme for controllers more complex when he's suggesting a feature that replaces a current one that can be performed with a controller already, hold the left bumper and then holding the right trigger. All that said though, I don't think it's necessary. Anyone should be able to tell what someone wants based on who placed the marker and where it was placed, except in the case of ziplines but just communicating via chat is sufficient for requesting those.

Seems useful enough and also pretty easy to implement. Good idea if you ask me.

Hell yes please.

So, if the main problem I see that is opposing the idea is that it wont fit in the with controller control scheme, it should be fine if we just find another way to add it. Such as adding a secondary button press while using the laser pointer. Such as, holding LB/L1, and then having a soft lock, or whatever, for a another button, like LT/L2. When the trigger is held down after the bumper is held down, it brings up the menu. As there are rarely instances in which you need to use the pick in quick succession to the use of the pointer. And the menu should close if you don't hold the buttons down, and shouldn't open unless you use the correct sequence.
This was just a, like, 2 minute brain storm resolution, so if I don't get all the details, forgive me.

But as an after thought, this would mainly be a mark button addition. So, as an estimated guess, the RT/R2 button should mark when pressed with the pointer out, that just means the RT/R2 button gets a hold down feature that leads to the circular menu, which the player can use the right or left analog stick to choose from.
