Simply hit Esc, go to options, and rename your server so that Greenbeards know you're willing to teach them the ropes. There's already quite a few "Greenbeards welcome" servers out there that I see from time-to-time. No harm done in adding another one!
As for badges, don't worry about it. I have the feeling if they added badges for helping newbies, a lot of elitist jerks would just do the bare minimum to try and "teach" Greenbeards just to get it and show off. Might end up making it worse for the new players.
If you're just generally nice and helpful, people will start to recognize it. The playerbase is (relatively speaking) pretty modestly sized. I've bumped into a few of the same people multiple times, or made new friends after a series of good missions. That's a way better reward than some sticker on your avatar.
I wish I had time to teach the new miners at least the basics but real life work stops my dream.job of being a dwarf in space with big guns!
Just change your server title to something like "Greenbeard training - Learn the basics!" or something! Trust me. I'm sure new players will flock to it. I have a friend who's a greenbeard, when I'm not around they love going to those "Greenbeards welcome" servers, they're always really helpful and he's learned a lot in a short time.
What IS possible is for generous veterans to add greenbeards to their friends list and mentor them that way.
The ability for solo players to activate some sort of "distress beacon" which would highlight their server on the list in bold, or make it flash red or something, and allow others to join them. (Most likely this would only become available after Bosco has used up all his revives, or something along those lines; or possibly whenever you are dead and waiting for Bosco, you'd get a prompt offering you the distress beacon.)
The idea of opting into some sort of veteran "rescue" program was floated too, where you would be notified whenever one of these beacons went up and offered a pop up box to drop what you're doing and join on them.
- Those who wanted to be mentors (or 'Tutors,' as they termed it) could join and ask for an Officer role in the group.
- Those who were looking for some helpful guidance could join and create a thread asking for people to play with, or even DM any Officers who were online with questions.
I don't expect an official system to ever be implemented into DRG, but there's nothing stopping interested parties from creating a similar Community Group on their own.
It'd be a sizable project to create, maintain, and promote though. It was tough starting out for the PD2 Tutor group, too, and PD2 had massive player numbers at the time.
But where there's a will, there's a way
I like that idea. Although I can already see the issues with trolls seeing the beacons and joining just to ruin their game even further. Perhaps why they never went forward with it?
Devs never had anything to do with the idea.
that said, i dont want a system like the coaching in tf2 to be added, because its a pointless waste of time and essentially just babysitting
