You don't actually need to listen for them lol.
Not sure why you're having so much trouble finding them but it's actually pretty easy.
That's all you really need to look out for.
Just watch the bar, and the icon at the end (up arrow if it's above you, down if it's below, and a square if it's on approximately the same level).
But, those crystals aside, it's generally a good idea to be listening to the game, so you can hear threats coming. But if you're OK without that warning, enjoy your music.
Do you also have the square icon at the end (indicating that the crystal is on approximately the same level as you, and not above or below)?
Are you playing solo or with others?
Does the bar drop when you move, or while you're still in the same spot?
Of course it's normal for the bar to drop if you're moving and getting farther away. If you're not moving and it drops, but you're playing with others, maybe someone else dug out that crystal and your scanner is now showing the distance to a different crystal. If you're not moving and it drops and you're playing solo, that's not normal.
Also, just to make sure, the bar also changes color (blue when you're farther away and yellow when you're getting closer), and the bar level can change drastically when it changes from one to the other.
