weird thing, but the Lithophage Meteorite cracked itself
currently as I posted this I am in a middle of a Solo Hazard 5 On-Site Refining mission in the Glacial Strata as Scout with the Low Oxygen Hazard
a Lithophage Meteorite spawned as it usually does
it happened mid mission, I have not started the extraction yet
during a Wave of Macteras, I decided to call the Jacks so I can start connecting them after I finished the wave, but instead of calling down the Jacks, the Meteorite just instantly exploded on it's own
I'm not completely sure if that even was a bug, if it wasn't a bug I found it so weird I had to share it

It does that if the crackers don't have a good spot to land, it's an intended failsafe.

that's interesting
I mean the map was small and tight but there was room for both crackers on the other side of the cave, unless there's a strict limit on how far the crackers can drop

That's not really how it works.

They pick a random spot in a given sphere centered on the meteor, THEN the game checks if anything is blocking those spots, like other events or supply drops; if so it auto completes the event.

The game doesn't understand what a "good spot" is so it can't plan ahead, it just picks a random spot in a set distance and hopes for the best.

makes sense
meteor did fall right in between a connected pump jack and a tritilyte deposit
so what you're telling me is the cracker's landing position is already calculated before or right as the meteorite lands?

To be honest, I don't know specifically which, but yes; the landing spot is chosen before the failsafe check happens.
