3d video encode spike
I've enjoyed this game a lot with wife and friend, but this keeps crashing my game.
Picture attached[imgur.com]
I have a strong CPU and GPU, those shouldn't be a problem. I've tried disabling all other programmes, running game right after reboot, tried to run PhysX on GPU and CPU.
For some reason it didn't work for 3months, then I tried it a few days ago, we did 4 missions, played again today, did one mission fine, then crash again. After that crash after crash.
Checked for overheating, and even other games I've run at CPU 80 degrees without a crash (I know that's not good). This game keeps me at a steady 55, so that isn't the issue.
I've put my game down to all "low settings" on graphics, when I know my PC should be able to handle it on high or ultra.
I've disabled Gsync on monitor, vsync, all the fancy stuff. There isn't any "power saving" mode to my PC.
Last today I tried even PhysX on CPU with an overclock on CPU (which I never do).

Windows task manager does not always show accurate GPU usage. For example in half my games it only shows background usage and not game usage (This includes DRG in my case).

Have you tried everything in the stickied topic?

Not getting any popup-screen with any crash report as such. Only thing I can find is in my game files:

[CrashReportClient]
bHideLogFilesOption=false
bIsAllowedToCloseWithoutSending=true
CrashConfigPurgeDays=2
CrashReportClientVersion=1.0

The crash seems consistent with "a lot of stuff happening at once". It doesn't happen when things are calm, though it sometimes happens when we kick enough barrels around the space rig, and usually inside a mission when stuff is going on. Not graphics problem as such. Read somewhere that PhysX might be the problem.
As I mentioned, checked for overclocking, checked for "fresh restart", updated drivers, and this happened even 3 months apart.

Tried -dx12 launch option and verify game files, didn't help.

CPU usage when crash[imgur.com]
It doesn't overload all my CPU's, but it overloads some of them. Tried without vsync, even though that is GPU based things.

Tried to set process to "realtime priority". Crash still. This time only CPU 6 and 3 was the one spiking. The others got small spikes, but nothing hitting the roof.
Checked if there were other processes spiking, but there weren't.

I seem to be having a similar problem. Haven't investigated it as deeply as you have, but my crashes seem to be consistent with "lots of stuff going on at once" eg: lots of explosions/glyphid swarms etc. Weird because I can't recall this ever being a problem before.

The Video Encode usage seemed odd to me, unless you're streaming or something (I assume that you are not). I'm an AMD guy, but I've read that the Nvidia software has an Instant Replay option that will record what's happening on your screen, and that may account for the Video Encode usage. You might want to look for that and make sure that it's turned off.

I have no idea if that will actually help with your crashes, but it might at least eliminate one possible cause.

Good idea.

It was never on now that I checked, never used the feature. At least now I know that isn't the issue. I even tried to go into its settings, set the recordings down to 30fps, 360p, last 15sec and lowest bitrate...

So I did a number of things, and it worked. Not 100% sure which did the trick.
I went back to Nvidia control panel, found the game option and set stuff back to "use default / global settings". I seem to have tried to set some Vsync to fast and some other stuff.
I also made sure to go into processes, find the Nvidia "Shadowplay" and end the process. I tried the same with Nvidia share, but it only popped up. No way to shut down the overlay though. Thanks for the hint on the video encode Waste_of_skin :pickax::steammocking:

You're welcome. Glad to hear that the game is working better now.

ok, tried uninstalling nvidia even, did a lot of more stuff and noticed the video encode and 3d CPU spike wasn't the issue. Those happened after I closed the program. Now I crashed even without any spike in GPU or CPU. I tried disabling almost any other program that wasn't necessary, including browser and "windows software protection service" or what it was called.

So, the game was crashing, then it stopped crashing for a while (based on your last post from a few days ago), and then started crashing again?

If so, I have to wonder what changed in the middle (when it stopped crashing, and then when it started again).

Is it crashing immediately? If not, does it run for a while and just crash occasionally, seemingly at random; or is it more often?

Without more to go on, there's always the possibility of some failing or overheating component (CPU, GPU, PSU, etc.). Some monitoring software that kept a log of things like the CPU and GPU usage and temp's might be useful, so that you can see what's happening while the game is running.

I've checked my monitoring software for heating and that's not the issue. They barely go above 65 degrees or so, and I can even go from a cold PC, boot up this game and crash within minutes. You don't reach critical temperatures that fast.
Waste_of_skin Mar 15, 2021 @ 2:12pm
Things might heat up pretty quickly if you had something like a failing fan or bad cooler mount, but it sounds like your temp's are fine.

I was just grasping at straws with the overheating possibility, since there's really nothing to go on. If the game stopped crashing for a while (as indicated by one of your earlier posts), then I still have to wonder what was different at that point.

GSG just released a new update. I would try the game again, just to see if anything has changed.

If the game is still crashing, some system info might help (CPU, GPU, RAM, etc.). Also, have you checked the pinned "[READ ME] Common Issues ..." topic? The first post has suggestions for various problems.
