Hard Crashing my PC
My game has been hard crashing reliably within five minutes of having it running. My entire PC will restart.
I've searched far and wide and tried every solution on the steam forums and elsewhere.
I'm not overclocking and this is the only game that has this issue.
If anyone has had similar issues or knows potential solutions I would be eternally grateful.

Of note, sometimes the game crashes gracefully and I get the

Assertion failed: [File:Unknown] [Line: 198] Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost.

error and it says my video card crashed. Is that a separate issue or tied to the one you diagnosed above.

Yes.

Again, worst case scenario, you re-install Windows and update, you should be fine. Assuming there is no hardware damage.

It could also be a BIOS setting that might be doing that, where it stops using the Nvidia graphics card and swaps to the Intel one. You might need to make sure that the settings in the BIOS are set to use the Nvidia card at all times, no matter what. Although, I don't think Razer would make it so that you had to ever go into the BIOS so it's probably just the issues I previously laid out.

Follow the guide, you should be fine after doing everything in the list I've provided.

Good Luck and if you have any questions, just ask. I am here whenever I have free time.

But you aren't using logic with your statement and you are implying that I am lying so...

I never meant to imply that you were lying. I happened to think that you were wrong, but lying never crossed my mind.

Had you mentioned 1909, it wouldn't have been an issue.

It was never an issue.

Just to clarify, the "issue" that I was referring to was me (or, more specifically, my reply). That was quite clear in my head when I said "it wouldn't have been an issue", but apparently you can't read my mind. :happymeat: I just meant that if you had mentioned 1909, I (hopefully) wouldn't have missed that they still had 1903 (and then I wouldn't have started all of this).

This ability yet eludes me. One day perhaps. (crossing fingers).

Hopefully final update. Experienced further crashes after reinstalling windows. Managed to isolate the problem to my secondary SSD which was failing. Disconnected it and no crashes since.

Excellent.

I am sure the PC works tons better to after re-installing Windows and removing the bad part.

Remember that SSD's have a very limited lifespan, usually about 3 years. If you are constantly download and deleting items and not using TRIM, you will shorten the life of your drive considerably. Certain brands provide varying levels of quality so depending on the brand of SSD you buy, you might have a drive that lasts what seems like a lifetime, or a drive that has problems all day everyday.

Make sure you use TRIM, at least once every few weeks, and make sure you plan for a replacement drive within the 3 year life span.

Good Luck, have fun!

Made some testing. My Problem is Graphicscard related i think.

I filmed HWinfo and Taskmanager than i played the game until it crashes and there is something strange. GPU Clock goes from 2100MHz by 1.038V (150W) to 1365MHz by 0.719V (80W) okay thats normal because the workload (taskmanager) goes from about 24% to around 8% but than half a secound before the crash the clock lowers again to 510MHz by 0.719V (50W), the memory clock goes down from 7300MHz to 810MHz and the workload goes up to 56% but the core load lowers from 32% to 7%? Something like link speed changed as well from 8GT/s to 5GT/s wich is not suposed to change while playing a game. GPU temperatures are around 33-40°C so thats no problem.

I tested the other components aswell: CPU (stock and overclocked), Mainboard (VRM and so on), RAM (stock and overclocked), SSD... way before and half an second before made no major difference. Maybe with my overclock running i got a couple degrees more here and there than without but there was nothing strange at all. Like 5GHz from beginning until the black screen appears. temperaturs where pretty low. The highest temperature i have seen in all of this videos was 55°C on my hottest CPU Core. Everything else where cooler.

Maybe its some kind of bug where deep rock and the nvidia drivers would mess around with my specific hardware i thought. So i decided to install Linux. Got the latest release from Ubuntu got all drivers, installed steam and proton (its platinum ratet on protondb.com, means that it should run without problems and out of the box) aaaand.... crashes too. Damn it -.-

Maybe i messed up some thermalpad on a memory chip, on a SPS or something else that can be hot and has a overtemperature protection. i have only temperatur readings from my GPU core so that would make sense. I dont get why this is the only game with those crashes...
the next few days i will check those pads and the paste.

I dont get why this is the only game with those crashes...

Every game application is different. They might have similar pieces or do similar stuff but they are ultimately vastly different and use the hardware in different ways.

All hardware is quirky. The same can be said with software.

Nothing is perfect.

I had issues playing Call of Duty Warzone but not the regular game.
I had no issues with any other games.

It turns out it was my graphics drivers, which were the latest ones but, they just didn't install properly even though everything worked except Warzone. It took just one game that used the hardware in a very unique way to manifest the issue.

After removing everything Nvidia and re-installing, Everything works perfectly now, all games, no matter what. It was all just a weird quirk with how it installed that was causing the issue I had.

I've had a card that was perfectly fine just die on me one day. Turns out one of the memory modules just died off for whatever reason.

I've had another graphics card that worked perfectly, exhibit strange behaviors, turns out there was an issue with one of the memory modules on that card as well, it worked but it wasn't working as intended and would cause strange behaviors as a result.

Just remember hardware is strange. If you've ever handled your hardware without grounding yourself, you may just have introduced a small static charge that has slowly destroyed the components over time. It doesn't take much.

Anyway point of the story...

Hardware is quirky and strange sometimes.
The same goes for software.

In this case, we can rule out software as the issue.

It's obvious that there is some issue with your PC hardware that needs to be addressed.

I wish you luck.

Yes indeed it was the OCZ-ARC100 SSD

BTW I also double checked and my display is a 100Hz display.

Yeah OCZ drives love to fail and often ship with out of date firmware that require you to download OCZ's tool so you can update the firmware as well as use their TRIM.

I am surprised your drive lasted 5 years.

Review of Blue Screen Crashes.

DyingLightGame.exe - RADAR_PRE_LEAK_64 - Memory Leak.
Discord.exe - RADAR_PRE_LEAK_WOW64 - Memory Leak.

The memory leaks can be related to using out of date chipset drivers and Windows itself being out of date. It can also be caused by a poorly setup overclock or memory being seated incorrectly, aka in the wrong DIMM slots for your configuration. Etc.

All other crashes are Windows Service Related.
Updating Windows 10 to the latest version should correct these issues.

---------------------------------

END OF REPORT

---------------------------------

Consider doing the following to address these issues....

Guide here

Create Fix Windows Update errors by using the DISM -
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/947821/fix-windows-update-errors-by-using-the-dism-or-system-update-readiness

Make sure you use an administrator level command prompt or power shell window.

That is locating the application in the Windows search, right clicking it, and running as administrator. Otherwise this fix will not work as intended.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

!NOTE: Important When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions. However, if your Windows Update client is already broken, aka it's saying your are up to date when we know you aren't, then using a running Windows installation as the repair source, or use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files. To do this, run the following command instead:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:*:\Windows /LimitAccess

Where * = a file/folder path, example E:\Windows, from a Windows 10 installation USB/DVD.

If you do not have either of these items, you can easily obtain them, for free.

Using the following Microsoft provided application to do this...

Create Windows 10 installation media -> Download Tool Now
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Note: You will need an 8GB + USB to create this media. You can alternatively make a DVD.

Once DISM has completed successfully you would then type the following...

sfc /scannow

It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.

If it completes successfully, run Windows Update/Restart the PC.

If you are still having issues, even after all that

You can visit the previous Microsoft link but instead of downloading the Media Creation Tool, you would download the Windows 10 May 2020 Update.

This will sometimes correct several issues preventing the previous methods from working properly and you can then run them and repair the damage. This will sometimes however not correct the problems due to some underlying hardware or software problem that cannot be easily corrected. In these cases I recommend contacting the PC manufacturer/troubleshooting the hardware and if it's just a software issue, it's best to re-install Windows fresh at this point.

I would also highly recommend putting Windows Updates on Pause and uninstalling/re-installing all the Nvidia software via the Applications List.

Start > Settings (Gear Icon) > Apps

Some of the Nvidia software will require you to reboot before anything else can be removed. So it will take 1-2 reboots during this process to remove everything properly via the Windows tools provided. You can use 3rd party software to remove the drivers all in one go...But, I don't recommend this. Just use the Windows tools. Go one by one, one at a time, until everything Nvidia is gone.

Once all the Nvidia software has been removed, download the latest drivers from Nvidia's website.

Latest Nvidia Drivers -
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/

Install them, reboot, and you should be good to go.

You can now unpause Windows Updates and resume normal updating procedures.

The reason you pause the updates is because if you don't, Windows will try to install the latest WQHL Nvidia drivers and they will sometimes conflict with YOUR install of the latest drivers. It's quite annoying that Windows does that but it's easy enough to get around without tampering with any files or settings, just hit pause, install, reboot, resume updates.

Note: This process is similar if you are using and AMD graphics card although it's much easier as AMD has everything bundled into 1-2 packages that are easily added/removed. You still want to pause Windows Updates before you do any of this as again Windows will try to install drivers, sometimes while you are installing the latest one, and things get messed up.

If you are using an Intel motherboard, also make sure you have the latest drivers installed.

You can do this easily via the following link...

Intel -
Intel® Driver & Support Assistant (Intel® DSA) -
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html

If you are using an OEM PC, visit your OEM's website and download their update tool to make things easy on you if you aren't computer savy.

Examples...

Dell -
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us?app=products&~ck=mn

HP - Let HP detect your product -
https://www.support.hp.com/us-en

Every OEM has their flavor of updater. Just make sure your get the one for your PC from your OEM. Install it. Run it. Update.

Hopefully that helps a lot of you having issues.
