Hard Crashing my PC
My game has been hard crashing reliably within five minutes of having it running. My entire PC will restart.
I've searched far and wide and tried every solution on the steam forums and elsewhere.
I'm not overclocking and this is the only game that has this issue.
If anyone has had similar issues or knows potential solutions I would be eternally grateful.

I would be more than happy to try and help you out.

Would you be kind enough to provide me a dxdiag via a link from a pastebin.com page.

You run the dxdiag on your PC, it creates a text file, you copy the contents of the text file, and use the pastebin website to paste the contents + create a link to the page.

You can run a dxdiag by doing the following...

Start > Windows Search > dxdiag > Run the application > Wait for it to complete it's scan > Save all information... > Save it to your desktop or some other folder where you have easy access and can open and copy the contents of the file it generates.

things got a little bit weired. i could play several hours before the first crash. after this crash i had a really hard time restarting the game without a hard crash. after 5 times or so i got this:

The Exile mentioned ArmourySwAgent.exe, but you said ArmouryAwAgent.exe . Which is it?

A Web search didn't turn up anything for ArmouryAwAgent.exe, but ArmourySwAgent.exe appears to be part of the ASUS Armoury Crate software.

https://rog.asus.com/us/innovation/armoury_crate/

I haven't used Armoury Crate, but it doesn't appear to be something that you really need. So, if you think that your problems might be connected to ArmourySwAgent.exe, you could try simply uninstalling the Armoury Crate software (rather than trying to kill the process, which might get restarted by the software/system), and see if that helps. Or, you could uninstall it and then install the latest version.

Don't just kill the task, completely remove that software. It is responsible for the vast majority of your crashes on your PC. Your Windows Crash Logs confirm this. Whatever it is, it's garbage software and it's messing with your PC. Remove it.

Uninstall and use an application like Revo to make sure you remove every last trace of that garbage software

Why can't you install the latest Windows Feature Update?

Are you using an illegal copy of Windows?

If so, I recommend you don't use an illegal copy of Windows and instead just do one of the following...

Switch to Linux or Install the evaluation copy of Windows every 30 days until you can afford to purchase the license.

Are you in a country that is preventing you from updating?

Either way...

Whatever your situation...

I recommend doing the following...

1. Open a administrative windows powershell window.

Start > Windows Search "Windows PowerShell" > Right click and Run as Administrator.

2. Run the following commands. Take note of the command's output.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Important When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions. However, if your Windows Update client is already broken, use a running Windows installation as the repair source, or use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files. To do this, run the following command instead:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess

Replace the C:\RepairSource\Windows placeholder in the previous command with the location of YOUR repair source USB/DVD. For Example F:\Windows.

NOTE: If you have to use the second method, you would need to create Windows Installation media on USB. This means you will need a blank USB drive, or a drive you don't mind wiping, that is at least 8 GB + in size.

You can use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to create the needed USB/DVD, which you can download from the following link...

Create Windows 10 installation media

< Download Tool Now >

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

3. Once the DISM completes, in the same Administrative PowerShell Window type the following command...

Type the following command and press Enter.
It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.
sfc /scannow

4. Pause Windows Updates.

Start > Settings ( Gear Icon ) > Update & Security > Pause Updates for 7 Days

You need to do this before you do anything else.

5. Uninstall all Nvidia related software currently installed on the PC. Do not use third party software to do this, just do it through the Windows Applications list. You will have to reboot several times during this process to remove everything.

Start > Settings ( Gear Icon ) > Apps > Uninstall Nvidia related Software entries in the list.

6. Once everything is removed... Download the latest drivers from Nvidia.

Go ahead and just try the latest driver set, even if your Windows isn't at the 2004 version. It should be just fine either way.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/results/161303/

Restart the PC once the drivers are installed.

7. Install the latest Intel related drivers.

Use Intel's Intel® Driver & Support Assistant (Intel® DSA)

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html

Restart the PC.

8. Visit ASUS's website and download the drivers for the following items...

AUDIO - Version 6.0.1.8666 2019/06/17
LAN - Version 12.18.9.7 2019/07/08
WIRELESS - Version 21.90.3.2 2020/06/09
BLUETOOTH - Version 21.90.2.1 2020/06/09

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS-XI-HERO-WI-FI/HelpDesk_Download/

Install each of them. Reboot after each install.

9. Once all of them are installed.

Resume Windows Updates.

Attempt to update.

If Windows Update refuses to allow you to update, try using Microsoft's Updater Tool from their website and the following link...

Windows 10 May 2020 Update

< Update Now >

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

It will either force the update or it will just let you know that the update isn't ready in your region.

10. Repair the game files via Steam.

Open Steam.
Go to your game's library.
Find Deep Rock Galactic.
Right click "Deep Rock Galactic"
Properties
Click the "Local Files" Tab.
Then Click "Verify Integrity of Game Files"

Try the game. It should not crash anymore and you should be fine.

IF IT DOES!

Uninstall the game, and re-install it.

If it still crashes...

You probably need to re-install Windows at that point. Something else is messing with your system and it's not going to get fixed without doing so.

Let me know how it goes man.

i think i followed the discriptions you made pretty accurate
Got Armoury Crate uninstalled with the tool. the powershell comands did work. i uninstalled the graphics driver and reinstalled it. than i could install the windows update with the update assistant. than reinstalled the game as well and yeah i think its more stable than before but it crashes again. as you say, something seems to be messed up.
So reinstalling windows... man that sucks. 'here we go again' a dwarf would say :D had to reinstall it a few months ago cause a windows update bricked the pc.

thank you for your help that was way more than i expected and will try it the next few days. Hopfully it'll work. I dont know if it wont i might install Linux :D

PSU: seasonic prime ultra titanium 750w
Got my CPU overclocked with 5 GHz running with only 1.2V by LLC 5. I already tried to erase the CMOS so thats not the problem.
Temperaturs are not even close to any limit.

No Windows update will ever brick the PC. You probably have some sort of virus or issue that needs to be addressed causing you problems when you update.

When someone says something is bricked it means to have the firmware of the BIOS so toasted you can no longer boot. In other words, you need specialized tools to reflash the BIOS to un-brick the device.

My advice, and this goes to everyone that might read this, do not think you will never have to re-install your OS. Always operate under the assumptions that you will need to re-install the OS at some point and make sure you save important documents and files to an external USB hard disk that is formatted as exFAT. Becareful what websites you visit, what games you download and install ( AKA Valorent - Do not install or play this game, ever. ), what programs you install, etc. Nothing in computing is perfect and you will eventually have to re-install the OS to fix some major issue that cannot be addressed by other means.

Originally posted by Ramshy:

That voltage is way to low for that overclock which may be why you keep crashing.

1.4 V is the average I've seen where it is stable and actually adds performance instead of just looking like it is.

Low "Safe" voltages can also damage CPU's when they are to low. This 1.2V is far to low.

Also just because you have stable frequency in say something like benchmarks or applications it also doesn't mean you've gained any performance by doing so.

Example, Ryzen 5 3600 was being run by several individuals at 1V or some silly non-sesnse like that.

It worked with everything they did. They got higher frequencies etc.

HOWEVER!...

Because they undervolted so far, their CPU was not improved and was in fact degraded when compared to stock clocks and voltages even though they were able to over clock the frequency higher than stock.

This is why testing stock vs the altered setup is very important with CPU's and even GPU's. Just because some program says it has a higher number now, aka clock frequency, doesn't actually mean performance has been improved in any meaningful way.

By running with such a low voltage you also risk severely damaging the CPU's memory controller, among other parts of the CPU.

Originally posted by Ramshy:

What do you mean by trying to erase the CMOS? Do you mean just reseting the CMOS? You don't want to erase it, resetting it by removing the battery for a while is fine though.

Originally posted by Ramshy:

Not a problem, anytime. It should work without any issues after you re-install Windows. It always does. Assuming you don't re-install whatever program compromised the system in the first place and assuming your hardware is configured properly and has the proper drivers.

1.2V is far to low for your overclock though and I would bet anything that is where your issues stem from.

Originally posted by Ramshy:

I highly recommend you do install linux. It's a much more secure operating system and it's much easier to fix issues since everything is open source.

It will however limit your ability to play certain games that use anti-cheat software like battle eye. Although one might say you really shouldn't be playing those types of games anyway as they are usually full of micro transactions and not respecting the user's rights.

Sorry its 1.245V (dont know why ive written 1.2 i testet 1.2V but that causes some weired behavior but at least Cinebench was working fine at this point) i steped down from 1.35V in 25mV steps. Everytime i did some benchmarks about an hour and yeah it works great. 18h AIDA64 was no problem either. In Cinebench R15 and R20 i got the highest resoults at the very end of my testing. My AVX offset is set to 0 .The only downsite is that i couldnt clock the cache futher than 4.3 GHz what should be fine as far as im beware of and my RAM overclock went pretty poorly i had to load the XMPII profile to get it running on 3200MHz CL16 dont know if its an issue with the CPU overclock or just poor RAM sticks. I bought them 2x (2x8) because that was less expensive. I had have no problems with this overclock at all by any kind of testing. If Something crashes i test it with completly stocked configuration with restetting the CMOS.

That was my 2. fault. I missunderstood the meaning of the word in this case. I meant the settings in the BIOS to be ereased not the hole BIOS. However by comparing Stocked and Overclocked there is no difference in stability. I even run this particular game with 800 MHz Clock speed because i had clocked my CPU down for playing an other very old game wich needed that and than i forgot to raise it again. Pretty funny because Deep Rock was just working fine. Maybe 10 or 20 FPS less than before and only playing with 4 players in very intense sences. The thing why i am telling you this is Deep Rock is really not intensive for the CPU even if my Overclock would cause some weired issus i think that would be more a problem in other applicatons. Whatever keeping this in mind do you think the low Voltage is still a problem?

Temperaturs are at a maximum of 80 degrees but only in synthetic benchmarks. In this game they are way lower. I will post some detailed temperaturs later this day or tomorrow. I dont think thats it got 5 degrees higher ambient temperaturs as a week ago and less crashes after removing Armoury Crate. Futhermore there is no difference between i start the pc the first time and play and after hours of playing. The crashes are completly random. I also tried to set all my Fans to 100%. Same thing there was not really a difference. The only thing i really noticed is after going through your guide and i think its more depending on the in game events. Coreinfuser and the Droppod at the end of a mission causing this crashes more likely. After a Crash i have a bad time restartung the game. Often it took 3-4 times until i can restart it set the graphics settings to low and the resolution to 1080p. That settings just work fine for me.

I have no problem with reinstalling windows the only thing is that i have to configure everything and download all games again. Im from Germany and the internet speed here is pretty poor so this will take a while. Thats the reason i said the next few days because i need much time to do that and its not done in 3h deleting and installing new drivers or installing updates. Linux get more and more attractive to me but first i have to look what programs wont work on linux and how i can workaround.

1.3V-1.4V if you are going to increase clock frequency to 5 GHZ+ all core on the i7 9700K.

I'm having the same issue as OP. Hard crashing my PC, requiring a restart. Started about a week ago, and has become more frequent to the point where it happens every mission either during launch or shortly after.

Have reinstalled NVIDIA drivers as per instructions (tried both an older driver and the latest), updated windows (can't seem to get the May 2020 update as I think it's not released in my region. Yes, I'm using an original copy of windows). I have also reinstalled DRG. Not having crashes in other games or software.

Paste of my DxDiag is below.

Would appreciate any help you can offer! Thanks!
