Report a translation problem
The first time was last night (about 24 hours ago) when seemed to be caused by the host starting a game and then crashing. He restarted the game and re-hosted a game session. We think that the server accepted players into both "sessions" but directed them to the same host. The result was we ended up with 8 players in a mission. It went fast.
The second time I had it happen again this morning when I joined another player's server and a 5th player kept joining and then leaving not sure how it happened. Everyone seemed genuinely confused.
Some things to note: The game works fine with 8 people, though it is unbalanced. More guns make shorter work out of enemies and they don't scale difficulty to get harder. The drop pod only leaves when ALL players have entered. Not just 4. There aren't enough seats for everyone. Upon returning to the lobby spaceship... players without their own "room" to spawn in will spawn on top of the drop pod. Through a bit of glitching, they might be able to "enter" the pod, though the door will be closed and unable to leave until the host selects a mission.

It's not, what you experienced was likely a mod/cheat.
So maybe these issues remain but enough has changed in the code and scope of the game since my screenshots that I wouldn't count on it.
