As for solo play, it is 100% playable solo as you get an AI flying helper called Bosco that can actually make some objectives easier than with another player.
You will probably get downed a lot starting out, mainly from the combination of gravity and darkness. You will get lost or left behind by Molly or teammates... You will struggle with the map, and figuring out how to complete objectives the first time (There is a miner's manual in-game with lots of info, but mostly you just need to learn it by experience) You will run out of ammo, and stuck waiting for flares to regenerate, grabbed by a cave leech, and probably find a dozen things in the game that don't seem "fair". That is a natural progression to get used to. But there are no limits to how often you can get downed when playing coop (Solo there are a limited # of times Bosco can revive you) So play with some patience, an open mind and don't take the game overly seriously. Nearly no one else does, and nearly all players you play with will come and pick you up, even in the heat of extraction with less than a minute to get back to the drop pod. Just stick to their butts like glue when heading back and you'll soon be helping the next generation of DRG recruits.
Rock & Stone
If you want to do a mission alone you get Bosco the robot, he can carry large objects, mine stuff out of walls, revive you and shoot things. He can even put a light up for you.
Ive had few issues with random people, I host 99% of the time and have very rarely ever had to kick someone for being an idiot to others.
260 hours in the game currently and maybe 10-20 of those hours have been in MP with friends so it's definitely playable solo.
DRG Can Definitely Be Done Solo- Some Bonuses vs a Team Is You get Bosco to Help You, You Can Press ESC to Bring Up a Menu and 'Pause' Whenever You Need To, and You Can Take Your Time and Explore Every Nook and Cranny of the Caves If You Want to Get All
the Extra Loot and Minerals per Mission
There are Some Negatives-
-With Bosco You Only Get 2-4 'Revives' or 'Lives'
(I Do the 'Traditional Game Standard' of 3 Revives)- With a Team, even a 2 Dwarf Team,
You Technically Have Infinite Revives as Long as a Single Dwarf Remains Standing,
and Can Survive or Dodge Enemies and Revive other Players
-On Average, Missions Will Take Longer, Anywhere from an Extra 10 Minutes to say 40 Mins for a Refinery Mission, BUT as Mentioned Above, You Can Be Sure to Grab Everything on a Mission
-Certain Missions are MUCH Easier and Faster With a Team, and were More Designed for Team Play- Escort, Refinery, Salvage, Elimination, and Probably the Brand New Drillevator Mission- That Being Said, I Can Complete Every Type of Mission Solo, They Just Might Take Some Extra Time- Refinery, which Involves Laying 3 Sets of Pipes, Always Lags a Bit Solo, Even With a Solo Driller, But It's Still One of My Favorite Mission Types- Salvage You Have to Defend Small, Circular Zones While Waves of Enemies Attack You- It's Much Easier Having
1-2 Other Dwarves That Can Roam About, Outside That Circle- Yet Salvage Is My 2nd Favorite Mission Type, and I Play It Solo All the Time With All 4 Classes
-There are Also 4 Different Machine Events, Where You Can Infuse Matrix Cores for Rewards- 2 of Those, Kursite and Ebonite, Can Be Done Easily Solo- the 3rd, Tryilite Deposit CAN
Be Done, But Bosco Doesn't Help Like an Actual Player Can, So I Never Do Those-
the 4th, the OMEN Tower, Is Damn Near Impossible Solo, You Need a Team
Overall DRG Is Meant to Be Played as a Team- And I Greatly Enjoy Playing With a Team-
But For a Long Time I Had Internet Connection Issues where I would Drop Out and Not Just Disappoint Myself, But Frustrate a Team, Leaving Them In the Lurch- Now I Have a Good Connection, But Still Play Mostly Solo Because of My Schedule, and Also Because I Like Playing Solo Often
So Solo Is Definitely Still Very Fun- Everything Dies and Blows Up In the Same Awesome Way, and the Game Still Has All Its Thrills- But When You Can, Play With a Team Now
and Then, It's Often a Nice Change Up after You do Lots of Solo Missions
No, but seriously.
I had to plan ahead and father a son 10 years ago to have a teammate.
Solo is blast. Co-Op is a blast.
This game is a hidden gem.
