Joined game, missed gifts

I joined a friend's game and the mission started right as the "open your gifts" screen appeared. On returning to the rig, the screen didn't appear again, and restarting the game didn't make it appear again, either. Did I even get any gifts? What were they?

No you didn't get any gifts. They're just effectively to show you new assignments. Do the assignments and you'll get the actual gifts.

it's just the game telling you there's a new assignments Christmas event available

If you got anything, its added right away. The popup is only there to show you what you got.
In other words if the popup would have shown a new headgear, you can look into the wardrobe and see what you have gotten. Its marked with a red exclamation mark (!).
Sometimes you see Assignments being unlocked as well, and you have to go to the assignment terminal (next to the mission hologram terminal), and do the missions to unlock stuff.

Clicking on the "open" buttons effectively does nothing but play an animation, show you info you could get by reading the event announcement, and allow you to close the popup.
You didn't miss anything.
