how to scan on the drill deeper missions

think I'm missing something, but how do you scan on the drill deeper missions. Had to leave a mission because I couldn't figure it out.

The waves on the scanner represent the distance between you and the target crystal. As you get closer, the waves pulsate faster and fill more of the bar. If youre really far away, the bar turns blue.

The yellow shape on the right side of the scanner shows the relative height of the target crystal. If the crystal is above/below you, the icon will turn into a triangle pointing up/down. If you are at the same height, the shape turns into a losange.

Anyways, near the upper left corner of your screen will be a proximity meter. It will fill closer to the right as you get near a resonance crystal and change color. At a far distance, the meter fill color will be blue, at a closer distance, the meter fill color will be yellow. Once the meter shows you are less than a meter or so from the crystal, use your ears and listen carefully. You should hear a distinct sound. Start digging where you hear that sound at its strongest. You should uncover a crystal eventually. When the crystal is exposed, hold a button to summon the scanner. Connect the scanner to the crystal with the cable, fasten the scanner to the crystal, and repeat for the remaining crystals.

This mission is somewhat similar to the egg hunt in that you must explore the cave, searching for something specific.

When all the resonance crystals are found, a drilling rig will be summoned automatically and fall into position. Go to that rig, and when you and your team are ready, go to the four posts of rig, and push the boxes in with a button press. Then, press a red button to descend in a straight line. Bugs will crawl at you from above, the rig will occasionally stop for various reasons, and you must repair the rig by interacting with its four posts. When the rig hits the bottom, extract the morkite seeds from the big crystals coming out of the wall.

When all the seeds have been deposited, you can call to extract. Go back to the drilling rig, grab a pair of ridiculously souped-up jet boots (MORE POWER! ARF! ARF! ARF! ARF!), and FLY up the vertical tunnel. They require very little time to recover from overheating. After that, get on the Drop Pod like usual.
