I'm from NA and there is a lot of time that no one will host a mission I have for assignment and if I don't want to wait much, I have to do them solo.
It's even worst for the Deep Dives that are rotating every week... like this week I only managed to find people to do an EDD... looking every now and then I never been able to find a team to play the regular DD.
I have more than 500 hours and just recently decided to add the Hazard 5 to my games to see how the players were but mainly to have more servers available when I'm doing an assignment.
That said, it might be different for you and it will vary for sure depending on the time you invest in the game per "week".
There is no level requirement for any difficulty, and H3 should be considered "easy" mode, especially for a team, with H4 being "regular mode". Lots of higher level players will play at H3 and H4 alongside newer players, and only elves would be giving newbies any grief for joining in. You can host lower level games as public and someone may join in, especially once the mission is in progress.
On Steam, you're never wanting for a game online with others - just filter by Haz 2/3/4 and pay attention to which one you want to hit...There's a bit of a leap from Haz 3 to 4 and bigger one to Haz 5.
But, heck, we're always looking for new dwarves to send down into the caves on suicide missions over here on the Steam side. Join us!
Also, I do play occasionally on both MS/XBOX and PS5 - and while the game seemed farily healthy over in those areas last I played there, the players counts don't approach Steam's and never have that I saw (except maybe a brief time when it first hit MS Game Pass).
Why start that tired old argument here? People should play the game the way they want to play it. That horse has been beat to death for over a decade. It's pretty much definitively accepted that keyboard/mouse is a generally superior precision wise in an FPS, but if you've spent your whole life playing with a dual analog sticks, why would it matter to anyone else if you want to continue to play that way?
And don't fool yourself, there are many wickedly good players out there that can almost effortlessly solo EDDs/Haz 5s with a controller - I can barely muddle through a Haz 4 with one, so I'm actually kind of envious of their ability to basically pick up and play at that level with a game controller.
Generally, this community, even so long after launch, are extremely open to newcomers. There is a fairly ingrained sentiment of "leave no dwarf behind" i.e. even though it doesn't matter much as long as at least one person extracts, people will make every effort to support the other team members.
Most people, especially early on, will just take on an assignment and go hopping lobbies to squads doing a relevant mission, or host an open lobby themselves. It can be extremely difficult to find a regular group of recurring teammates unless you go to the discord maybe or have friends playing. In summary, consider doing the initial assignment "conquer hoxxes iv" solo if you want to learn mechanics, then hop into a reasonably scaled lobby and learn from other players and don't press any buttons or rush into situations without checking with other players (usually by typing "r" in the chat).
He would probably answer to this like : "That's what forums are made for".
But don't think because I say so that I agree or disagree with him though.
