As far as escorts being a pita solo? Yep, sure are. Coop is a lot faster, smoother, and easier there. Engi has it easy there and I’m solo in general, if you’re finding solo too hard just roll engi. Turrets can defend while you gather oil shale. But I got it done this week as with every week with driller without losing a piece of doretta because I pay attention to audio cues, respond immediately, and always fully repair before heading back out.
As far as the modifiers, swarmageddon while solo is nothing. I kinda like it more than baseline, it’s a good modifier in my book. That and parasites, regen bugs and elite threat are my favorites. Low O2 solo isn’t a challenge but it makes things slower, but the Real nemesis of solo players imho is haunted cave. Whereas low O2 is easier solo than as a group because there’s just one person (and thus you can always have Molly hanging at your side), Haunted Cave is way harder because you can’t have someone on distraction duty while others clear the mission. I personally find it to be brutally annoying, and would rather have SwArmageddon than that any day off the week (and twice on Sundays).
But ofcourse that does not quite work the same when going blindly into a DD.
The only thing i can imagine being worse is Jellyfish swarmageddon.
I dont like gameplay mechanics that limit build choices, and force certain meta's.
Having said that, macterra swarm is a similar mutator but i love it, because it allows me to use the snowball OC on my cryocannon. Without the build being bad on haz4-5.
It's like having a free arcade machine at home. You don't' have save files or anything, if you're lucky you get lives, if you're real lucky 1 or more continues, but eventually you will see a game over. You just try again, except you don't have to drop in another quarter to try again.
You have free games. The only hindering factor is time and will power. If you feel the amount of effort you invest equates to an equal amount of increase in skill, and as your skill raises your fun and enjoyment of the game as you express your new found prowess is enough, then it should be a motivating factor.
But I see more often as time goes on, someone encounters an obstacle, faces adversity, and suffers a loss, and it just completely breaks them and rather than buckle down and hop over that hurdle, park rangers are called to come and remove the obstacle instead.
Having said that, we all have things that frustrate us and things we don't like, and it's nice to have a place to share those frustrations.
It's just unfortunate when some people let those frustrations dictate their emotional state of being and perceive all outward opinion that doesn't align or assuage with them to be an afront against them.
1) Can drain your ammo. Focus on AoE weapons and conserve ammo. It also acts as a soft timer since it punishes taking too long by depleting your ammo. Try baiting them into a conga line to kill them faster and more efficiently.
Engineer turrets are of particular interest since they aim perfectly and don't overkill. Use them.
Driller has weapons that can radiate heat or cold just by firing, making sort of a protective aura.
Scout has to move a lot and let Bosco finish them (similarly effective as Engi turrets). Cryo grenades are also very effective.
As for gunner, I'd take either Autocannon build (rapid fire with Carpet Bomber or a lot of ammo with Neurotoxin Payload, also suppressive fire upgrade) with cluster grenades OR Minigun (with Burning Hell and perhaps agressive venting) and the Incendiary Grenades.
2) They are fast, they are small, and they hurt. Run, kite, maintain distance. Avoid melee with these pests. Passive perk Thorns is amazing against these critters.
If you are a Gunner, knowing when your zips are can save some health too.
