As long as you fulfill your role and don't constantly get downed, you won't upset others. Choose the difficulty that properly suits you.
I wouldn't worry about playing with randos as you can choose mission difficulty and it's likely everyone will be at the same place as you during low difficulty missions. In my 1500 hrs experience I've found toxicity to be pretty rare.

No one can answer this question but you. For some people it's fun playing solo, for others it's not. In my opinion, this game should only be played as a team.
Usually if you just follow the lead of the more experience players, and ask question, you'll do just fine, and will probably pick up the nuances of this game pretty fast.
There are a few "do's and don'ts" for multiplayer, the most important one being "ready checks". Do not press the escape pod button, or start up events and such without making sure everybody is ready to go, as there could be other things to find in the caves, such as secondary objectives, minerals, etc.
