I give up. I just can not see well enough to enjoy DRG. Help would be appreciated.
Short version: Legally blind. Use 5x flashlight mod and all the de-clutter mods I can find. Still can't play a lot of the zones. I was in a crystal cave on my latest run and there was literally so much clutter and crystals to try and see around (let alone navigate,) that I rage quit. I want to play DRG. I love the game in theory. But between the geoscanner I can't use and the mines I can't see...

How could they fix this? Offer a "remove clutter" option. No vines. No ash. No crystals. No obstructions. Everything wide open and visible... well, as visible as some of those tight caves can be at any rate. How could they fix the unreadable geoscanner? Height gradients. Light/dark or colors.

I'm not just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to ♥♥♥♥♥. I actually want to play DRG and not be a millstone for my able-bodied friends. I want to at least be able to do solo runs.

Edit: removed the unfair bit about the devs not caring. That's not fair. They do care. They gave us modding. But I still maintain they're going in the wrong direction and not offering us options to keep up.

Edit2: Solutions have been compiled here. Short version: ♥♥♥♥♥♥ the scanner. If people can use the scanner to navigate, it doesn't matter how much crap hangs from the ceiling or floor. https://steamcommunity.com/app/548430/discussions/3/5294572213363890967/

I realize you're angry but gaming is a visual medium, and DRG specifically is a dark game that takes place in caves.

I don't think it's fair to say they don't care about disabled players, they've added colorblind options; but a no clutter option as simple as it sounds is no small amount of work.

It's not unreasonable to presume your audience can see..and I mean that in the nicest way possible; I'm all for helping disabled gamers game.

I just happened to see this mod today. Perhaps you could give it a try https://drg.old.mod.io/flashlight-40m

I wouldn't be so upset if they weren't hell bound and determined to add the most obtuse, cluttered new biomes that ever did exist with no way to make them easier to see around. I mean I did an accessibility showcase when their modding API went out to the masses.

I want to love this game. Honest to god I do. I love dorfs. I love mining. I don't mind the darkness. It's a mine. It's gonna be dark. And there are mods. But the clutter makes simply navigating impossible! And I know sighted people hate it to a lesser degree because my roommate and friends won't stop ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about Fungal due to the vines.

https://drg.old.mod.io/no-more-dollar-store-flashlights-5x That's the one I use. It works in zones that don't have a bunch of clutter.

Edit: I like yours better. Cheers!

Hmm.... sorry to hear about your issues OP. I'm not sure what else you could do as it sounds like you've explored a lot of options so far. Just wanted to respond and express my condolences for your frustration.

As for removing so much it would likely take away too much and idk how viable it would be. I get it, but unfortunately I think it's not so much the devs don't care about people with impairments/disabilities, and more that the theme itself just certain facilities by default and it's hard to accommodate otherwise. Exploring the underground in tight corners where there's a lot of vision obscuring objects is true IRL to some degree, and I wouldn't call a company that helps set up spelunking and cave exploring expeditions as not caring about the vision impaired because of that.

Perhaps someone else here can give you a better suggestion to make the game playable for you, and if not I hope something can be done for it in the future.

I think that accessibility is a very important thing for games to have, especially absolute gems like this game, and hopefully ghost ship games fix this in time.

I think that the "remove clutter" option would be a great fix for this type of problem

and ghost ship games have added the colourblind options so they do want to make sure everyone can play.

Oh I'd never outright say "remove this thing wholesale because muh eyes." I'm an advocate of options. All of them. Let us play your game our way and such.

OP you could in the meanwhile visit the modding Discord and ask if anyone's interested in helping you out with a mod to declutter stuff for you (unless you're interested in learning modding yourself).

I'm not sure if certain things can be removed that easily though since they are 'physical' objects, and as such part of the terrain. Vines are one thing since you can run through them and they're just a visual thing, but crystals is a whole other thing. You might need entirely different cave generation for that.

Clutter manipulation probably isn't as far-fetched as it sounds. It's done with holiday ornaments like pumpkin and christmas present cave clutter during holidays, and back in season 2 for a while I remember there being unintentionally overcluttered caves like with crystal formations that literally took up entire cave spaces. But I have a feeling it's part of map generation itself, and not something that can just be toggled.

Maybe there's a hack/mod for a fullbright mode so there's no darkness whatsoever.
This mod[drg.mod.io] basically did that, but I don't know whether it works anymore unfortunately.

just out of curiosity, how bright does the screen need to be for you to see contrast? could you provide some screenshot examples to show what your screen is like intensity wise?

you know, in case an enterprising modder who is good with lighting and contrasts might make you an accessibility mod clean and easy

It's mostly the crap obscuring my view more than contrast but I am all about helping modders make accessibility mods for different-♥♥♥♥♥♥-eyed folk. Let me reinstall and get you some screens... and some of the ♥♥♥♥ I can't see around.

I play at full high contrast and with the flashlight mod Entity Mystic linked. I'd have LIKED to get pics from Fungal or somewhere else but there weren't digs for them. Like I said, it's the clutter. It's too much.
PK_Thunder Nov 10, 2022 @ 8:25pm
There is nothing wrong with any of those screenshots.

Your eyes work. Congrats for you. My two big issues are the clutter making navigation (especially backtracking) impossible for me and the scanner being impossible to read.

We can’t see the world through your eyes, because at least to me, there is nothing out of the ordinary with those screenshots lol.
He asked for screenshots and, pissed as I am at the game, I reinstalled it and got some real quick before the migraine set in. It's impossible to show the world through my eye. Doubly so since I was born this way so I don't know how normal people see.

My eyes don't work. I have very thick glasses and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ depth perception thanks to an orbital fracture when I was young. I'm also hearing disabled and I have serious damage to one hand.

You sound like you're describing a mental/intellectual issue and attributing it to eyesight.
