How is this game monetized?
I loved the gameplay when trying it out during free weekend, but I'm reluctant to get it at these prices. Can someone summarize how this game is monetized?
I see the base game is pretty expensive (for me) and there is a bucketload of dlc.
What sort of dlcs are there? Are there microtransactions? Are there infinite cosmetics to collect? Are there lootboxes?

Aside from the soundtrack, all the DLC are smaller cosmetic bundles that typically include an assortment of skins, outfits, headgear, and paintjobs. Basically; cosmetics. None of the DLC has any impact on gameplay at all, and the amount of cosmetics added through DLC is very small compared to the amount that you can unlock in-game through the varying means of progression.

So, all DLCs are cosmetic packs, mostly for supporting the devs.

No microtransactions.

Not infinite cosmetics to collect, but hundreds for your character, weapons, and pickaxe.

No lootboxes. Infusion cores might be considered close though as they do give a random cosmetic reward, but they can't be purchased with real money, you can only earn them after you've promoted at least one dwarf through forging cores or completing specific missions.

This isn't EA Games. DRG is not "monetized" at all beyond a handful of cosmetic DLCs and the base price.

You pay and you get access to all weapon customisation and missions in the game, dlcs are all purely cosmetic, there's no lootboxes or microtransactions or pay-to-win type stuff.

You get everything from base game, DLC only gives you cosmetics, and there are no microtransactions, nor an incentive to endlessly grind crafting materials after you've unlocked all the basics like weapon upgrades, which only takes like 24 hours of gameplay to get.

The DLC is all cosmetic stuff and a soundtrack. There are no other in-app purchases besides what you see on the storefront. The game also has hundreds of cosmetics to be unlocked through gameplay, whether it's from finding crates to repair and open, completing a side objective referred to as "machine events", or simply purchasing it with in-game money and resources.

Put simply, the base game is all you'll need to get a ton of stuff. Worth every penny.

Mate, it's cheap and has a great replay value.

DLCs are purely cosmetics, their descriptions highlight that.

Lootboxes - yes. In a form of a mini-game, where you either need to find a lost helmet or batteries for a box, both (the helmet and box) contain cosmetics which don't affect your gameplay.

No microtransactions.

UPD. Ha! Seeing you own 377 games, with some actually expensive titles. DRG price shouldn't be a problem for you then.

That's not a lootbox. A Lootbox is a paid item that is basically legalized gambling. Crates and Helmets are just RNG rewards.

You have to buy the game with money.

Lets agree to disagree :)
I see a lootbox as an unknown reward for some kind of action, whether it's paid "effort" or a minigame.

So in an MMO when you kill a boss and it drop something in their loot pool randomly that is a lootbox system in your mind?
The term of Lootbox is when you buy things with real money and you get randomly rewarded (if you can call the rewarded when you got some crap instead of the main thing it can contain, like a mount or superweapon).

For the topic at hand, I would consider lootboxes stuff that you have to buy with real money for a random reward.

I am very happy to see this game has a nice, consumer and developer friendly model. A bunch of DLC for those who can afford to drop some more money into the game to help the devs, but all of the actual game is packed into the initial purchase. No microtransactions, no lootboxes, a finite amount of collectibles. It's perfect.

For the record, the devs really wanted it that way and they have absolutely no intention of ever changing this so this isn't the kind of practice you'll ever see from them, unless the whole actual crew (from the CEO to every coders) leaves the studio for whatever reason.

So yeah, that's basically not happening :P

Also they intend to push forward into updating that game for as long as they can. And so far, it's been doing very well for them so they are gonna keep working on it !

You have to send 5$ to the devs every 2 games you play.
