ERROR HELIX HUNTING
Error helixes if you don't know, are extremely rare deep black structures shaped like DNA that have only been documented in the radioactive exclusion zone.

Now something might have caught your eye there, these things are so rare that the wiki has it barely documented, I thought it would be cool to go hunting on some lower hazard levels for them, I'll be around tomorrow and send me a friend req and leave a comment if you are interested in documenting these mysterious structures

What's to document about them?

They're barely documented because there's not really anything to document. I doubt anyone seriously even maintains their wiki page since it has wrong info, and that it isn't listed in biome features page.

They really aren't that rare, I've seen plenty of them around in my time. Never make mention of them when they're around due to just how common they are, they never faze me anymore since the first time I saw one when they were first added to the game.

The trick is they're only found in one biome specifically which makes them seem rarer than they are, and even then gravity wells in the azure weald are way more rare than the helixes ever were.

I’ve noticed a few interesting facts about them:

They only spawn in REZ

They often spawn in groups (If you see one, there’s likely more in that stage)

They negate light sources such as flares near them

They have strange yellow crumbs beneath them

The error ID they give on the scanner is different from the Error Cube’s error ID

They aren't rare. Not much more than other structures.

What is this?

Strange thing

I wonder if it's edible

Who told you they're extremely rare, I see them all the time. Thye never appear outside radioactive exclusion zone, true, but once you're in there they do show up quite often.

They can spawn in biomes other than REZ. They're just more common in REZ (or rarer in other biomes) for whatever reason.

provide screenshots

afaik, nobody has seen one out of rez and there's no screenshots of it up here on steam when searching 'err' or 'helix'
the most I can find is the wiki saying "possibly" appears outside of it with no evidence

Over 500 missions in, never seen one outside REZ. Cave gen for every biome is different, and REZ is the only one with error spirals it's safe to say. Error cubes do show up everywhere.
yeah I've never seen the helixes outside of REZ either. to me they're like its rare 'biome gimmick', like the magic holes in azure weald-type of rare.

Strange things.

This isn't true.

The reason they aren't documented is because they don't do anything. It's just another crystal formation.

So error cubes are "eggs" and only radiation can make them sprout out into helixes.

I'm certain I've encountered helix on Fungus Bogs (2-3 maps; one was intersecting with a skeleton formation), Glacial Strata and Sandblasted Corridors. However maybe less than 10 total non-REZ spires in my entire playtime.

The stupid thing about them is that they are stupidly mundane and the only time people care to document them are when 5-15 show up on a map, or greenbeards see them for the first time with full mystique (compare to xenofungus that only get pics taken of them by mushroom fetishists).

Or I'm gaslighting everyone including myself. Like some screwed up black-swan UFO enthusiast.

They used to be even rarer due to a bug (fixed now) which made them ONLY spawn on escort missions. Which meant that players who never played escort missions on azure never saw them.

Again, if you don't have pictures it doesn't really matter. Either take some if it happens to you again or find some uploaded here. Memory is an unreliable thing, and maybe false memories can stick with people from dreams.

If it can show up in sandblasted or something, then surely there's at least one. Even just some greenbeard would take one, or someone who's like "oh I thought these were only in rez"

If you go looking for an upload, I'll save you some time and say I didn't see any under searches for 'helix', 'spiral', '019', or 'err'. Every single picture has been REZ.
