Tips for climbing with grappling hook
Okay, so it maybe comes from my inexperience, but I find it exceedingly hard to use grappling hook for climbing upwards.
It is very useful (absolutely counterintuitively) for climbing down as it allows to to swing by and negate all fall damage with ease.

But when climbing upwards, you have to aim for something higher than your target landing place. Which results in falling from the ceiling and taking fall damage. In theory you can disengage your grappling hook at just the right moment, let the momentum take you only a tiny bit over the ground and gracefully land where you want. But in practice the time window for this is extremely short. The pull is very fast, so 9 out of 10 tries I launch myself too far and take fall damage or ram into the wall under the landing place and fall all the way down to where I started from.

Is there some clever trick I am not seeing, or is grappling hook simply very bad at climbing upwards?

you should be able to have enough room for error to have your shields take the fall damage when coupled with the scouts fall damage reduction from his tier 3 armor upgrade.

You will get used to the momentum from releasing and be able to take little to no damage from grappling whereever you want.

Obviously if you're trying to grapple directly up onto a sheer wall or ceiling there isnt much you can do except ask for an engineer platform or an ally to stand right below you to cancel fall damage.

Are you using the upgrade "Overcharged Winch" for the Grappling Gun? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2230043701
If so, try switching it out for the other available upgrade in that tier, "High Velocity Ejection System."
Personally, I do NOT like Overcharged Winch for exactly the reason you mentioned. It's much more difficult to control, and is a detriment to my maneuverability.
I don't think that the Ejection System upgrade is stellar, but it doesn't negatively affect me and I definitely don't want the Winch... so it's better than having nothing.

It takes practice, but you'll get the hang of the timing. In general, there are two things you want to keep in mind:

1. If you want to stand on a very narrow ledge (like, say, on a deposit of Nitra), aim JUST above it and hang there for a second or two before releasing the hook so you don't "bounce". That should give you a fairly reliable stand on the Nitra.

2. If you have to hook to a surface you can only put your hook on the edge of, release just as you arrive and hit space twice. In most cases this will flip you onto the surface.

Thanks for the tips, guys. So, in conclusion, there isn't really much I can do, but take upgrades for lowering fall damage and get used to the disengage timing enough to not take any substantial damage.

Nope, but I still find the speed a bit too much to reliably release the Grappling Hook at the right moment. Especially when it gets laggy
Just in case it helps...

- The perk "Hover Boots" can help you mitigate/avoid damage when you find yourself in an accidental freefall.
- Once you start collecting OverClocks for weapons, the OC for the Scout's M1000 rifle "Hoverclock" can also be a useful tool in avoiding fall damage.

It'll just take practice to get the hang of using the Grappling Hook, but these can help make the learning process less painful :P (Or later on, can be employed in tandem with the grapple hook for some cool tricks at mobility and mining)

The power of the momentum is often underestimated by new users, perhaps you can try releasing the hook a little earlier.

Lag is definitely an issue for scout, a fast-paced class. When there's crazy delay due to bad connection, I won't stay on the server. It's a big source of frustration and total waste of time for everyone.

Upgrades to boost retrieval speed or firing speed are greatly overrated. The things that matter are range and recharge speed. When going vertical to a ledge, obviously grabbing and riding to a point just above the ledge is preferrable. If the roof is reachable, or a higher point along a wall adjacent to the ledge then grapple to that and release as you are about to clear the height of the ledge and use your momentum and the magic of midair course corrections to land yourself on the ledge. I find the more range you have, the more options you have from a given location.

With upgraded recharge speed and top level hoverboots, you can grapple, then hover long enough for the recharge and grapple to another position.

Hoverclock can be useful, but it doesn't reset your momentum permanently. For instance, if you're falling and use hoverboots around 1/2 way down, when they wear off and you start falling again, your speed resets from 0 so it's a fall from half the distance. With Hoverclock, after the hover stops, you will resume falling at your original speed. So Hoverclock is viable if you can engage it right before hitting the ground so that you touch down while under it's influence.

The Special Powder overclock on the shotgun is also fantastic for getting a boost to elevation for grappling, and also as a cushion for landing.

I just do the Horizon Zero Dawn grappling hook move lol Jump off a ledge then grapple onto a higher surface above you.
