What happened to updates?
Havent popped into DRG for a while since i maxed out most of the characters and got gold on all 4, been loving this game for years, but after drilling deeper, i figured i would come back for the next season.

one helldivers and space marine 2 later, still nothing

I know it might be insensitive to ask, but what is ghostship doing? ive been here since day one and i feel like the content has just gotten slower and slower overtime, and the quality/quantity of it hasnt really gone up that much

And when i say updates, i mean real content ones, i dont really feel like the mild holiday reskins count as major updates.

I really do love this game way more than helldivers and SP2, but im really starting to run out of stuff to do after playing everything 1000 times.

But if the dev studio is busy, thats fine, im not demanding angrily that they make more, just wondering why, and im a bit worried we are nearing the end of support for the game after these years

They're working on another game.

My best guess is they are probably focussed on making Rogue Core.

Normal life cycle of most games is what is happening.

The game is seven years old. The time for frequent substantial content updates is long since past.

The game might be 7 years old, but sales are still amazing.
I don't think it's a very smart move from them to stop working on updates in order to develop another game. DRG is a goose that lays golden eggs.

The "other game" originally started as an update to DRG, and they're making a new game precisely because DRG is a goose that lays golden eggs. It's still a DRG game, it's just such a different flavor of DRG that it doesn't make sense to have it be part of the OG game.

In short, it's a different game in the same franchise.

hopefully that steam post will give you the answer you're looking for. The TL,DR is that they're busy with Rogue Core for now.

There's only so much you can add on to a seven year old game, much less a seven year old game that nobody expected to be a smash hit.

Eventually a game's codebase will no longer be able to support efficient content additions; this late into development you have so much tech debt built up around everything - especially if you weren't planning for long-term development from the start - that making changes or adding content just takes so long that it stops being worth it.

Then there's also the consideration that the gameplay loop can only handle so much. There's only so many missions they can add without reaching for a bunch of new mechanics just to support the mission. There's only so many weapons they can add before they run out of niches to fill. There's only so many enemies to add before new ones start to feel like copies.

End of support for games is expected. Frankly, the fact that this one lasted several years after early access was over is highly unusual. Most non-AAA games don't see continuous support for anywhere near that long, or are else stuck in early access hell until they're abandoned.

I'm sure the devs would love to continue printing money with this game, but the reality is that it's not sustainable anymore, in terms of content saturation, passion, and return on investment. No game can grow forever.

The fact they aren't updating the game much is why the player count plummeted. Didn't stand a chance against fresh new versions of the same kind of game.

Well yeah, but that's a normal part of any game's lifecycle. Game updates slow as they become more & more feature-complete over time, and players will eventually move on to newer games after they've had their fill. Nothing lasts forever.

7 years is a pretty darn good lifespan for a video game though - most games don't last that long.
