VPN?
Why would someone host a game while using one? Avoid region lock? If it is not going to change then can we get a PING setting in the server list instead of Close, Medium and Far? Having it list "Close" and having the Ping at 254 is bad design and can be avoided. Why not implement this feature?

People use VPNs for a lot of reasons, some of them good, some of them bad.

But according to the devs, showing ping on the server browser isn't doable.

Iunno if it's related with vpns but proximity system doesn't work for me. "Close" works mostly fine but medium is like a coin flip, you either get a fine connection or have >200 ms latency. Also i don't know why France shows in medium yet PRC shows in close (All chinese ones have >300 ms), i don't use vpn during games.

DRG relies on Steam's back end to estimate distance, that's not likely to ever change.

So the flux capacitor wattage is being rerouted through the warp engine manifold by way of the bio electric gel packs on deck seven by Ensign Fred down in Engineering. That explains it.

That, and the steamengine's hamsters are under fed and on strike, resulting in wrong parameters for the flight control.
I don't know why they do it but I just leave a server if it's marked as "Close" and then it's 200+ ping when I join it.

Been having to do the same.

Hell...not just the game browser...our ping to the host should be floating over our friggin' heads in game.

You can see it in game, in the menu.

Nice...never hosted...never bothered to check what was there in-game...except what I ignored when hastily accessing the UI options menu.

I think there is also some kind of advanced display you can turn on in the UI options for ping and jitter and packet loss and all that?

Knew about that...partially why I never bothered looking elsewhere.
The UI is so F'n tight...brain-fart assumed it should be there without hitting ESC.

AFAIK, when the server browser says "close", "medium", and "far" it's not actually talking about physical proximity, it strictly talking about ping times. So someone using a VPN would only be "close" if they still had good ping despite it. I would imagine typically, however, that using a VPN would increase ping times and thus make the server browser more likely to call them "medium" or "far".

In other words, you're worrying over nothing.

I've noticed this as well. I've had people from Japan who are marked as far but for some reason a room in Netherlands is medium?? (I'm in southeast asia)

It's the exact opposite actually; the distance is based on your region, not your ping times (you do not even ping the servers more than the once), so a "close" server could be someone from far away using a VPN, etc. Of course, ping times can vary for a lot of other reasons than distance, so it's only a guideline.
