PE: I usually choose a spot near the platform with a high wall, making a line of plats above and setting up the turrets with their backs to the wall, so atleast I have somewhere to fall back to, and the turrets can cover the platform itself; as well as resupplies that are placed nearby.
Refining: I typically pick one of the 3 lines that suits my needs best/or needs my attention the most, and make a stronghold at a point on that line that oversees as much of it as possible; again setting the turrets up with their backs to a wall and platforms above in a line if possible.
So basically, when in doubt, find a wall, make a line of plats fairly high on said wall, if you want to get fancy you can curve the line down on both sides and place Proxies there; then setup your turrets facing out from the wall. OR set them up on the outside face, pointing in, this will conserve ammo for defending said area, but make them less useful for protecting anything outside it.
Make sure the two lines of platforms that form a V dont touch eachother, so the bugs want to move to the middle where the ramp is.
Make 4 V shapes like this around the mining platform towards the ramps if you have the space, so you have a sort of X shape.
This will funnel enemies to the ramps where you can place turrets, and makes it easy and predictable for players to shoot the enemies.
Its low maintanance and you only have to reload your turrets from time to time.
The mineheads (the minehead and also refinery minehead) themselves have weak amount of repelling on them to keep bugs from hiding under the ramp or crawling on the minehead itself when approaching you. So keep that into consideration when you want to put repellent near them. (As usual the repelling doesn't work if you are standing on the source of the repellent, we've been through this of course)
Other than that, if you really want to set up a repellent fort in a way, pick a spot that is perfect for a team resupply hub and treat it like a Salvage Zone. Best if its somewhat near a minehead since everyone goes there all the time. The team might not use it often, but it keeps the resupply safe enough for people to snag one mid fight while waiting for the refinery to finish or waiting for the pod.
It might seems pointless, but a good miner with a good sense of survival will always try to stay near a resupply in these missions. Those repellent funnels will indirectly assist them into killing enemies easier without them knowing sometime. No matter if they are inside or outside the fort, well clustered bugs will always get blown up either way.
Plus doing that will naturally give you an Engineer fort that you and sometime(but unlikely) your team can retreat into and defend most of the time. One good thing about it is that you can make it pretty large compared to the usually cramped space of Salvage Op, so you have more breathing room inside and it kinda acts like a secured base when you're inside and a multi sided funnels from the outside as bugs will get clustered no matter what if they decides to go near it and sometime, go through it to reach someone.
Remember to still contribute to the mining/work effort, a faster mission is always better than fighting unnecessary amount of swarms, especially when it comes to Point Extraction.
You can also be a madman and turn the minehead themselves into a fort by funneling bugs into the ramp, but that is impractical as hell as you don't have good positions on a small area and bugs will sometime clip into the minehead platforms. Don't do this unless you are trying to meme in a safe mission.
If you are in a LowO2 mission, then its a different story, better practice your quick and simple repellent setups that you use in Mining Expeditions. Because you ain't making that many defenses on all those air tank checkpoints.
