Does it get deeper?
I know the title sounds a bit rude, but I don't mean it that way. I played this during a freeplay weekend with a few friends a while ago, but the game felt kinda shallow at the time. However, I assume that a game loved by this many people, and which has so many folks speaking glowingly of it, must have more to it.

Now, this was a few years ago, but I remember looking through everything I could see in the menus, but it mostly looked like you just unlock weapons that looked to be horizontal progression, and equipment that gave you an extra ability or two, but not much synergy between anything. It also felt like there wasn't much point to keep playing once you've unlocked everything.

So, what did I miss while I was digging around? I keep coming back to this game since it's brought up basically everywhere, and I'd love to find a reason to play it. What's your reason for playing this as much as you have?

If it was a few years ago, there has been a lot more things to unlock and earn added.

That said, yeah, DRG is more about expanding your options (horizontally) as you progress; rather than just getting outright stronger (vertically.)

Not sure what you mean by depth really? It's a lobby based co-op shooter, if you don't find the basic loop of doing missions with other people fun; no amount of anything else is gonna make this the game for you. Do you generally like lobby based co-op shooters?

It's fun and it's good. Simple as that.

Game's fun to play the hundredth time as it is the first time for me.
That's really all there is to it.

I enjoyed Payday 2 for a good while, since there was a lot of stuff to do, and it felt like personal expression of skill was a big part of the game. Missions were hugely different if you put effort in, versus if you were just kinda no-braining it and rolling through. Not sure if it counts, but I think that's the closest to this that I've played. It kinda felt like the only expression of skill in this was just how well you could aim, since you just ran to the objective, killed stuff for a while, and then ran back. Maybe further objectives unlock as you play that'd mix things up?

I'm not a huge multiplayer person in general, but I can typically see what people enjoy about the games, and I'm just having trouble here.

The real appeal is in the gameplay loop, mainly the mission structure and procedurally generated caves. The extra weapons and unlockables are meant to add flavor to the missions by adding diversity to your playstyle and how you interact with other players, it's the same reason why there are 4 separate classes with different strengths and weaknesses.

A. No cave is ever the same. Random events/wide variety of enemies/mission modifiers.

B. Layers upon layers of things to work towards/earn.

C. A generally high level of polish and refinement as a result of years of development.

D. Rock.

E. Stone.

Pretty much every first person perspective shooter consists of attacking with a weapon, and hitting a target in the head for extra damage, or in the torso for a normal amount of damage. While said thing being shot at, slightly wiggles to the left or right to dodge shots.
This is 90% of gameplay.

That is the baseline.
And 1000's of games do it. And most people, they consider it quite fun.

So is DRG deep? Well maybe not really? You hit rock, mine shiner rock when you see them, you shoot bug and press buttoms.
But I think it's still more nuanced than most f.p. shooters.

Just gameplay, really.
That you just about reach the peak of vertical progression in a week was something I liked about the game actually, makes it easier to get friends with a busy life to get into it

A large number of different mission types for fresh goals every match. A large number of mutators and additional warning hazards for each that randomly become applied every 30 minute at mission select for fresher goals. With random events and things to find/fight/see that may or may not show up in each round for freshier goals. And that really tough mission that forces everyone to work together and mine it all hard, just barely making it back alive. all of that put together for the FRESHEST of gameplay.

I find that the ability to manipulate terrain to your advantage combined with high procedural generation works really well to make the game deeper than many other first person shooters. You don't just learn how to aim, you also need to learn how to move around the caves quickly and without dying of fall damage or getting lost, which is tough. There's also a lot of resource and time management to learn instead of just getting ammo for free or being able to spend as long as you want on a mission like in some other games.

Higher difficulties also add a lot of depth, as the enemy diversity increases. There are tons of enemies that all have different ways of being dealt with, so learning how to fight everything adds depth to the game. There are also mutators and the missions themselves which add further depth and requirements for learning.

Equipment progression starts off vertical until you unlock all mods and overclocks, then the endgame is optimizing each loadout and learning the best way to use each weapon. The equipment customization is extremely deep IMO, I'm 700 hours in and still trying new builds and changing my opinions on the best options. Remember, if you have only played and promoted one class, you basically have only seen a quarter of the customization that the game has to offer.

As someone who loved PD2, KF2 and even Warframe and B4B for a while the answer is quiet simply NO.
If you don't like the basic loop of "Mine Ore, kill bugs, mine More Ore to kill more Bugs" then this Game wont be for you.
I myself have to admit disspointment, since from PD2 to KF2 to this it seems a downgrage in quality and quantity of content each time.
I still play Payday 2 from time to time, the other examples have been ruined a long time ago by bad additions like E-Dar.
But this game honestly feels like early access and doesnt have a significant enough ammount of varriety.

Well, the “gameplay appeal” can be broken down into multiple areas, but I’ll just give a few examples:

Procedural Generation: The layout of a cave will always be a surprise, and can determine how easy or hard a mission will be.

Weapon Loadouts: Experimenting with overclocks and modifications for weapons also shakes up the gameplay, since different loadouts will yield different playstyles.

Hazard Level: Obviously the difficulty level will have an impact on the gameplay. Higher hazard levels are much more chaotic, then lower hazards are much more casual.

Okay, sounds like the game just isn't for me, then. I don't think it's a bad game, but there'd have to be something more to it than there is for me to be interested. Which is a real shame, because I hate not being able to get why people like a thing.

Thanks for the answers, everyone. Hope you all continue to enjoy the game!

Fair enough, not every game is for everyone; good luck finding your next game.
