Start digging down a little and if you see a patch of white ground, you're good, if not, adjust your position a bit to where the dot is bouncing even more quickly, and try again.
I mean, the hearing helps but more often than not I just use the scanner.
Try lowering the volumes of music/voice chat/characters/mission control to help sound effects stand out more.
But generally speaking you can triangulate using simple moving on one direction and watch where it raises and starts to lower, move back to where it was highest, then move on that axis, then repeat on the vertical axis if needed.
If you move in the dark it also has a faint glow like the other ore chunks in the game. Plus, if you're close its often 1 pick mine to determine if you're close because it has a nice 2m white ore bubble so you don't need to be pinpoint accurate.
Devs gave us a lot of visual ways to find it, not just sounds.
1. To precisely locate the crystal, the visual indicator is a much more clear option. When you're on top of it, the indicator will bounce against the right edge for just few pixels.
2. To roughly locate the crystal, pay attention - your dwarf will say something about not wanting to play hide and seek, or such.
