The update that came with 5 was good. Nice update.
Honestly a relaxing time once in a while like this is always nice, a good reminder why you're playing this game in the first place and what your actual job is as a miner in DRG.
Balancing wise, I just want the Crawlers to not be a death sentence to deal with on the ground. Because any tactic that require you to perch on top of ziplines constantly is a very good sign of an oddly done balance, because you're not gonna have a Gunner all the time and doing that have a problem of stacking Crawlers to the point where anyone even attempt to pick at the rock end up getting swarmed and instantly dies.
Feels a bit weird for a game where standing your ground to hold back enemies is the main combat style devolve into bootleg helicopter minigun shootout cutscene in every military shooters, when it comes to the Corestone.
I want a challenge dealing with the stone and the spawns fighting them on solid ground, but making it near instant death is not it.
Other than the Crawler problem, nothing else really bothers me. Just a pretty okay season to lighten the mood and let you decompress from previous back to back disasters. Its about time the dwarves get to enjoy mining in peace for once, well as much peace as you get on this planet.
New mission is alright. I didnt like it at first but it grows on you when you find out how to find the crystals efficiently.
The new enemies are great, I like the Stalker the most. The overclocks are fun and some are even my new favourites, even though it feels like Scout got the short end of the stick. Haz5+ is nice but I wish enemy amount could be tweaked a bit higher, and increased enemy HP just feels unfun and disrupts all balance of the game, but you can keep that disabled.
While being mostly placebo, the cave variation update is subtle, but always good
Overall probably the best season so far since it improves so many little parts of the base game experience. Why so many hold Season1-2 in such high regard are the new weapons mostly, but I think it's unfair to compare Season 1-2, since the new weapons had been in development before the seasons even were a thing. I think it will be a while until we get new weapons again. But I think putting less emphasis on seasonal-gimmicks is definitely the way to go for future updates.
How have people not figured out the crawlers yet? Just shoot them, THEN do the core. There's a whole bunch when the event initially starts, but once you clear out the initial wave, it only spawns one or two now and again, letting you go for the core with literally no interruption.
Thanks for confirming that I'm not the only one here that noticed that. Felt like an insane nutjob when nobody believes me when I explained it in lobby.
Still though, good gosh these things absolutely destroys you when you don't have the smallest amount of stun to stop them once in a while.
the only thing i don't like is a couple of the new overclocks they introduced are really bad and i hope they get some buffs in a subsequent hotfix once GSG come back from summer hols
When season 1 rolled around I was very excited about the concept of seasonal content in DRG, I liked the idea of more thematic updates, I enjoyed the new content, and having a new faction of enemies was pretty interesting, but the best part about it was the fact the content did not overstay its welcome, outside of the odd event every now and then the new very different enemies weren't too frequent which helped with keeping the much longer-staying content feeling fresh
you probably know where this is going: seasons 2,3 and especially 4
sadly season 2 set the trend of making a new mutator related to the seasonal enemy and then covering the mission map in said mutator, combined with the events on the map which were fine enough on their own for setting the theme and you have gameplay that gets very repetitive and stale, having to deal with the seasonal content in your face almost constantly as every mission threw more and more of it at you, assignments frequently landed on missions with the mutator due to how many of them there were, and when you weren't on the mutator maps you were usually getting events thrown at you anyways
but I'm mostly talking about the other seasons here because I wanted to emphasis one of the biggest reasons I like season 5: It's not overly disruptive to the gameplay loop
season 5 to me almost feels like a return to what made season 1 so exciting for me which was feeling more like a cool content update than a seasonal gimmick, I'm back to having an insane amount of fun with DRG and loving the game again, especially after the dumpster fire that was season 4, and as for the rest of the content in season 5.
The overclocks:
Great overall, its nice to finally have new OCs to toy with and while there are some balancing issues with some (lol smart trigger OS) a lot of them are great or atleast interesting concepts and it's fun to have new ways to play with the same weapons
The mission:
Deep scan is fine, definitely not the highlight for me but it's not a bad mission either, fun to play it from time to time but it suffers from industrial sabotage syndrome where the more and more times it pops up in a promotion assignment that i just want to get over with the more i start to get bothered by the mission
New enemies:
The stalker, Scalebramble, and barrage infector are all great new additions, I don't have too much to say on them honestly, the stalker is probably the most interesting enemy we've had added in awhile, I love how it tries to flank you and catching one before it reaches you feels great, I do with it wouldn't sometimes just spawn on top of you and hit you instantly however
The event:
The core stone is probably the thing I dislike the most about the update, the event concept itself is fine but the crawlers aren't, the fact they're so overwhelming while still boasting stupidly high HP and damage making killing them a chore and almost pointless in some cases as they respawn insanely fast, leading to strats mostly being to spam CC like fear, stuns, and slowdowns instead of directly fighting them, or just save all you ammo and cheese them with a zipline
new cosmetics:
I love a lot of the new cosmetics, so I felt like I'd mention them here atleast quickly, I love a ton of the new helmets, the motor menace is an awesome facemask cosmetic which I adore (please don't destroy it like corrupted rebreather) I've thrown together a ton of new loadouts with all the nice new things, also special mention to the fact we got new things in the cargo crate and lost pack, as a veteran whos had those empty for ages it was really awesome getting excited about those again
also on top of that the season switch changes were great, no more cosmetic pool bloat for newer players and being able to freely change seasons means its a lot easier to engage/not engage with content you choose
I'm probably forgetting something but those are a lot of my thoughts on season 5
TL;DR: great season overall, minimal issues with it, fixed most of the garbage that seasons 2-4 brought to the game, hope it sets an example for how to properly do seasons for any future updates to this game
notice how they took veteran feedback and requests into consideration much more strongly this time, and everything's fine
notice how they went back on older aspects of the game and either added or revised previously added content, and everything's fine
notice how this was the first season released to universal acclaim across the playerbase and it's everything that i and many others were saying GSG shouldve been doing since S1's introduction for literal years, even despite the hordes of fanboys and discord regulars insisting that the game has to suck now, and get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ small updates that don't change anything and drag on for way too long, and that listening to veterans would be a bad thing, and who do you think you are wanting to actually play the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game you originally paid for, shut up and eat the seasonal slop you toxic tryhard fun hating leaf lover
and everything's fine
what sells deep rock galactic is the game itself. not stupid seasonal key jingling or forced seasonal mutators or an overbearing battlepass or events quite literally crash landing into your missions. the game itself has always been what keeps people playing because it's just a damn good game. building upon that foundation was always been the objectively correct way to update it
