Mic not working on linux

I can't get mic headset mic to work and I play on linux. I've seen a lot of suggestions about what to do for windows which doesn't apply to me. Does anyone running linux have a working microphone or have a similar problem?

Additional details:
My microphone does work.
I've tried wireless and with an audio-jack connection.
I have voice chat enabled in game and I've tried push to talk or just normal.
I'm using linux mint 20.

Also I tested the mic in the friends tab on steam and it works there too.

Need more hardware info like the headset, and or the system itself.

Sometimes you need to dig into the Debian support documentation to get audio working. As Debian is the parent of Ubuntu that is the parent to Mint.

Also:
USB Headset? Bluetooth Headset? 2x TRS headset? 1x TRRS headset?
Works with other applications like Audacity?

It is a steelseries 1 headset. The mic seems to work the same if it is connected via USB C adapter or via audio headphone jack. I just tried it with audacity and it did work in that application as well. Thanks for the tips. I will comment if I find a solution.

AFAIK there is no workaround or bypass to enable microphone under Proton for DRG for any type of headset. DRG searches for 'default input device', while Linux does provide the input device correctly, for some reason, DRG cannot use it, or use it properly.
Until developers change the logic behind audio input detection, we penguin users are out of luck.

Apparently this is now fixed in Proton 5.13-6 (https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2021/02/steam-play-proton-513-6-is-now-officially-out), but I haven't tested it yet.

I was just told in game that my mic works (why there can't be an indication that you are transmitting, devs?). Linux, with PulseAudio and desktop mic, using Proton-6.5-GE-2.
However I think this has been fixed in the game itself and not Proton - I had no luck before today.
