are there mods that could be harmful?
are there mods that are harmful in the ingame mod menu aka website like viruses etc? or are mods checked before actually staying on the website for mods like on nexus mods etc?

mod.io claims to scan uploaded mods for malware[blog.mod.io] before they are permitted on the site. i can't find any reports of a widespread infection occuring because of something someone uploaded to mod.io

of course, anything you download always has a risk of being infected no matter what it is or where you get it from. to be on the safe side, don't download mods with barely any indication as to what they are (no videos/images, no text description etc) and always check the comments (if there are any)

most of the risk would come from manually installing mods since that would force you to download the file itself which may contain a harmful file inside the mod folder vs allowing a more reliable site like mod.io to check the file for you.

you treat mods the same way you treat the internet, dont go roaming into dark corners you dont know. dont go to sites with wall to wall ads to pay for their space with shifty download buttons. stick to the main roads like mod.io and nexus and you are generally safe

i mean you cant get most games to hack someones pc with a mod file, you cant mod drg to hack your pc generally. you might be able to place a link to open up a webpage to somewhere risky thats maybe? as close as it gets, since games frequently have buttons that open to a given webpage like twitter or the dev forums. so maybe dependent on the game, you might be able to create a spoof site that looks like the dev forums and get people to enter their login credentials through modding that in-game link if at all possible

There's always a risk, but I've never heard of it happening from official mod sites. Even then, most mods that are worthwhile to have are going to also have tons of downloads and upvotes, so if it was infected, it probably would've been taken down awhile ago.

So, overall, unless you intentionally are looking for sketchy mods, you're not going to encounter anything malicious.
