20 grunts crawling down a wall towards you should not sound the same as 1, some sort of multiplier is needed for those sounds.
Then again, most threats in the game are extremely quiet, so maybe sneaky enemies were the intention from the start.
After hundreds of hours, I still have no idea what a cave leech sounds like before it grabs you, and I turn the volume up a lot when I play.
any enemy that produces an audio signal all players are supposed to hear (cave leeches, stingtails, mactera grabbers) has a chance to just be completely silent so you have no warning that theyre about to attack. cave leeches in particular are silent until they're right on top of you by which point it's too late to react in the first place
fortunately there's a mod that fixes the latter issue[mod.io] but for everything else you just have to hope you don't get trolled
As someone who is willing to wear the Soundwhore tag, I regularly sound position things in this game through walls. Its height positioning is poor (but is there) but the 360 degree radial positioning is nearly spot on. There have been times where my team has been unable to locate something (like the third pump jack head spot) and I have found it by hearing it out.
IDK, it might be the audio chip you are using. 3D tech is better on some than others. I have no issues with it on Sound Blaster Z or on the Steam Deck's High Definition Audio chip.
nitpick the terminology all you like, doesn't make it any less of an issue
Its like someone saying Toyota Camry's have loud engines (they dont, they are not quiet but they are not loud, much like DRG-3D audio) and then you coming along and saying "Yeh, there are issues with Camry's from (XX) model year backfiring all the time" which could def be a known and real issue, but is not the same as the engine just being noisy.
Its a (lightly) related issue (missing audio queues) that is impacting the feel of 3d positional usability, but its not an issue with the positional audio or the positional audio engine. Its an issue with outright missing audio.
i use headphones, a seperate dac/headphone amp (ifi zen dac) and DTS headphone x (which you can buy on the windows store). I get great positioning in every other game.
Most other games have an option for 5.1 though which is missing in DRG.
IDK if there's a config.cfg option for 5.1 tho?
Doesn't soundblaster have it's own form of 3d effects? that might be why it works for you and not me. I have a feeling (because i used to have a soundblaster) that soundblaster can create a surround effect from a stereo source but DTS and dolby surround need a 5.1 source to work. so you're possibly getting a fake surround which is probably ok but not as good as darktide etc with their 5.1 output and DTS/Dolby.
So you could be sitting under the lost gear helmet, and it sounds like its right there with you.
dunno how long this has been a thing, but it would be a nice fix someday.
i'll be using dolby for DRG in future.
This works well
