Deep Rock Galactic
Are two players enough to win?
As the title says. Due to the current sale, my wife and I try to decide if this game is for us. Some gameplay videos sure look fun, but since every dwarf has a certain role, it is obviously best played with four players. But can a team of two also be successful?

It always depends on one thing:

Skills from you and your teammate/s.

Ex. 2 players on haz 5 without overclocks can complete a mission, but it´s more stressful. :100disgust:
The most important difference each class has is their support gear and movement gear. Bringing more people just adds more tools the group has.

Each dwarf is basically self sufficient. No tool is so vital that you must have it but more tools you have access too is nice to have.
I just bought it on sale too but I have no problems clearing missions solo or duo. It depends on which difficulty you play, 1-3 are pretty simple, 4 and 5 are a nightmare for new players like me =)
Teams of two are BY FAR the hardest comp for this game. You will find missions way way easier with teams of 1/3/4. I'd probably rank the comps (from easiest to hardest0 as: 4player/3player/1player/2player.

Good luck!
...that said you can just play on a lower difficulty it really doesn't matter cause this game isn't competitive and only punishes you in terms of rewards for playing challenging content (to be clear more challenging = less rewards). Not really 'gamer' friendly, more casual friendly....minus the perks of being easy to understand or control.

And no I'm not going to apologize for saying that. A game is supposed to be challenging, yet this one is only challenging cause it forces you to grind for basic gear/abilities needed to play the game. I can give any new player full gear and perks and see them perform just as well as someone playing 10 000 hours
Deep rock is very friendly to new players; the difficulty can be controlled easily. I have played about 400h and still like it a lot. It has been built such that every class can win solo, and with two, you are up to the job regardless of which characters you choose.

A strongly recommend avoid hazard level 4 and higher until you feel strong enough.

Since you are currently evaluating options, I would like to point you to an observation of myself and a fixed group of friends: https://steamcommunity.com/app/548430/discussions/1/4932019356825840342/ . In summary, Deep Rock is very very strong when it comes to playing with randoms. The core gameplay is great, especially with friends. But ... the character progression system (i.e. the awards for missions) actually punishes you for playing in a fixed group: it slows you down! Most of the time, only one of the characters can make progress which can be frustrating for the others. It hurts me to say it, but the game's progression system is not really great when playing with your wife. I would still recommend the game if you like games like this and you are not afraid of the darkness + bugs. Maybe taking turns in progressing is less of an issue if you play with two players ... we were 4 and some of my friends were quite frustrated eventually.

Note that you only need the base game -- all DLCs are purely cosmetic without affecting the game mechanics in any way.

If you choose to play it - have fun! (I wish my wife would like such games :-) )
The game scales to player count, so 2 players is as hard or as easy as any other number; depends on the team members.
Just open a public lobby after your two player party is joined by your SO. Rock and stone
Been playing with just my 1 friend so far, and yes, it is very much possible, we've been working our way up to consistently winning Hazard 4 missions. You both need to just simply cooperate and know how to play the game, although it will go better if you pick a class/loadout that more fits the mission (point extraction = scout), its not a must though. You can still beat these missions with whichever class you like, but some missions do kinda favor one dwarf over others. Also, do not listen to Hellhound lol.

One more thing though, do take Ludewich's advice, start small, like, Hazard 2, to get the hang of things, then rise to higher Hazards when you feel you're able and ready. Hope you and your wife have a great time with this game.
Throughout my playtime I've found 2 player to be the most enjoyable when it comes to both pace and general fun. Just you and a friend having a nice time, nobody else to worry about or try to please.

I've done stuff in 2 player that simply wouldn't fly with more players since someone would inevitably end up stressed and wanna "get on with it".

Missions may take slightly longer but overall I'd wholeheartedly recommend DRG as a 2 player experience.
Thank you all for your answers, we will definitely give it a try!
The only thing that makes 2 players any more difficult than 1 or any other number is class synergy for mobility. For instance, two Gunners would be probably the worst, followed by Gunner + Scout simply for some of the potentially difficult traversal the map *might* throw at you. That said, it really just comes down to scaling down the difficulty until you find your groove. That said, the random public community is quite good, probably one of the best you'll find, and the game is designed to make it easy to have players drop into games so you can always host a game to the public and have one or two others join in. You can kick troublemakers, but they're honestly rare as hen's teeth.

Always living that opposite day
A team of two can still be succesful.
Very doable. I regularly host games for a friend and beat hazard 5/Elite deep dives without issue.
Easily doable, the game isn't that hard.
